Review basis: Researched on 23 October 2026 using ASB’s debt consolidation page, rates and fees, pricing notices, June 2026 loan terms, application guidance and privacy statement. The processing fee was removed from 16 February 2026. Some figures and effective-date fields on the rates page did not display; the interest rate is supported by ASB’s product pages. No personalised quotation was obtained or application submitted. Suitability and comparisons below are editorial assessments; approval and contractual terms require ASB’s confirmation.

ASB debt consolidation loan: rates, costs and eligibility

  • Provider and purpose: ASB Bank Limited is a New Zealand registered bank and direct lender. Its debt consolidation loan combines eligible borrowing, including credit cards, store cards, hire purchase and car loans.
  • Amounts and terms: Minimum NZ$2,000, with repayment terms from 6 months to 7 years. The checked product pages do not specify a maximum; the approved amount depends on ASB’s assessment.
  • Interest and APR: Advertised fixed interest of 13.90% p.a. for approved borrowers. The checked sources do not state a separate fee-inclusive APR.
  • Fees and insurance: No loan processing fee; ASB advertises no charges for extra repayments or early repayment. Other account, default or contractual costs may apply. No compulsory repayment insurance is stated for the advertised unsecured product.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18, be New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or eligible work-visa holders, and earn over NZ$20,000 annually. Credit, affordability and other lending checks apply.
  • Application and repayments: Existing customers can apply through ASB online banking. New customers can contact ASB or join before applying online. Repayments are fortnightly or monthly from an ASB transaction account.
  • Suitable use: Potentially useful for replacing more expensive eligible debts with a manageable repayment schedule. Compare total remaining costs before extending the repayment period.
  • Main restrictions: This product cannot repay an existing ASB personal loan or money borrowed from friends or family. Consolidation may increase costs if it replaces cheaper debt or substantially lengthens repayment.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on ASB

When considering ASB, I would give each existing debt a separate refinancing test. An expensive credit card balance may benefit from consolidation, while an interest-free purchase or a loan close to its final payment could become more expensive when spread over a new term. Ask for a comparison showing which debts to include, which to leave separate, and the total remaining cost of both approaches. That is the kind of comparison we aim to make clearer at LoansFinder: helping you judge whether the convenience of one repayment delivers a worthwhile financial benefit.

ASB debt consolidation eligibility and documents

ASB’s eligibility guidance accepts applications from people aged 18 or over who are New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or work-visa holders. Its debt consolidation application section also requires annual earnings above $20,000. Meeting these conditions does not establish affordability or approval.

ASB considers income consistency, expenses, existing debts, account conduct, employment circumstances and credit history. For work-visa applicants, the loan term must finish at least one month before the visa expires. Visitor visas are not eligible.

New customers need acceptable photo identification and proof of their current physical address, as explained in ASB’s identification requirements. Prepare income and expense information, supporting financial records requested by ASB, and current settlement figures for the debts being consolidated. ASB determines the supporting documents needed for each application.

When consolidating debt with ASB may help

This loan may suit borrowers with several expensive debts who can afford regular principal-and-interest repayments. The advertised rate provides a clear starting point when comparing debt consolidation options, while additional repayments can shorten the repayment period.

Assess each debt separately before combining everything. Moving an interest-free hire purchase balance or a cheaper loan into borrowing at 13.90% could increase its cost. A loan already close to repayment may also become more expensive if restarted over several years.

Compare the proposal with keeping existing debts and directing spare money towards the most expensive balance, or with other personal loan options that permit consolidation. If repayments already exceed what remains after essential expenses, explore debt management support and arrangements with existing creditors before adding another loan.

How ASB debt consolidation works

Application, settlement and repayments

  1. Establish the settlement amount. Obtain current payout figures, including any exit costs, and identify debts ASB will accept.
  2. Apply directly to ASB. Existing customers can use FastNet Classic or the ASB Mobile Banking app. New customers can contact ASB, visit a branch or join before applying online. The lending team’s number is 0800 100 600.
  3. Review the offer. Check the approved amount, repayment schedule, total payable and any conditions requiring existing debts to be settled.
  4. Confirm settlement and account closures. Establish which creditors ASB will pay and what you must arrange. Keep existing repayments current until settlement is confirmed; discuss closing or reducing revolving credit limits.

ASB’s repayment guidance specifies automatic fortnightly or monthly deductions from an ASB transaction account. ASB can open an account when arranging the loan if necessary.

How long does approval and funding take?

The debt consolidation page describes an immediate online response with next steps. However, ASB’s personal loan page says its team will contact applicants within the next week. These statements do not establish a fixed approval deadline. ASB aims to release funds on the same business day documents are signed, subject to its requirements being satisfied; allow separately for creditor settlement.

Questions to ask before accepting ASB’s offer

  • Which debts are eligible, who will settle them, and must any accounts or credit limits be closed?
  • What will I repay in total, including existing lenders’ settlement charges, and how does that compare with keeping my current repayment dates?
  • Does any security already held by ASB extend to this loan, and what insurance or other conditions would then apply?
  • Does my agreement confirm the advertised absence of extra-payment and early-repayment charges, and what account, default or recovery costs remain?
  • Can I afford the scheduled payment after essentials, irregular bills and any debts excluded from consolidation?

ASB debt consolidation advantages and limitations

  • Clear advertised pricing: The standard fixed rate is disclosed before application, making an initial cost comparison possible.
  • Lower entry and repayment barriers: No processing fee and advertised fee-free additional repayments support borrowers who want to reduce the balance faster.
  • Choice of repayment schedule: Fortnightly or monthly payments can be matched to income timing.
  • Restricted debts: Existing ASB personal loans and loans from friends or family are excluded.
  • Long-term cost risk: A seven-year term can reduce the instalment while increasing interest and delaying the date the debt is cleared.
  • Credit assessment still matters: ASB describes a clear credit history as essential in its application guidance; this is not a specialist bad-credit product.

ASB interest, fees and total repayment costs

The advertised rate is 13.90% p.a., fixed for the documented loan term. ASB calculates interest daily on the outstanding principal. The annual interest rate is not presented as a separate all-in APR.

  • Processing fee: $0. ASB’s dated notice removed this fee from 16 February 2026, superseding the rates page’s generic wording that a processing fee may apply.
  • Extra payments and settlement: ASB advertises no early-repayment charges. Its general terms also contain broad expense provisions, including references to early repayment; obtain confirmation in your specific agreement.
  • Other costs: Check transaction-account charges, existing creditors’ exit costs and any contractual recovery expenses. An overdrawn repayment account can attract unarranged-overdraft interest.
  • Default interest: ASB’s notice effective 16 March 2026 reduced the unarranged-overdraft rate to 13.90% p.a. for listed account types, including when used for loan deductions. Lower existing rates remained applicable. This rate is variable; confirm the rate for your account.

Security and insurance: ASB advertises an unsecured product and says secured personal loans are no longer offered to new customers. Nevertheless, its general terms can extend existing security to other borrowing unless agreed otherwise. Confirm your position if ASB already holds security. Those terms require insurance over secured property; the product page does not state compulsory repayment insurance.

ASB’s published repayment example

ASB illustrates $5,000 over five years at 13.90% p.a., with approximately $1,965 interest. That implies about $6,965 total repayment, before any additional applicable costs.

Our monthly-payment illustration is approximately $116.08, assuming 60 equal monthly repayments, a monthly rate of 13.90% divided by 12, and no fees, insurance, missed payments or additional repayments. ASB’s daily interest calculation and actual payment dates may produce a different schedule. This is an illustration, not a quotation.

Is ASB a suitable debt consolidation choice?

Our assessment is that ASB merits comparison when its fixed rate reduces the cost of eligible debts and the proposed repayment remains affordable. Its strongest feature is straightforward advertised pricing combined with repayment flexibility. Its main limitation is that combining debts over a longer term can undermine the intended saving. Compare total remaining repayment at a similar debt-free date, then check whether the monthly saving comes from lower costs or simply more time in debt.

ASB debt consolidation FAQs

How does ASB’s rate compare with lenders advertising a lower starting rate?

ASB advertises 13.90% p.a. fixed for approved borrowers, rather than a personalised “from” rate. A competing lender’s lower advertised rate is only useful if you qualify for it. Compare written offers for the same amount and repayment term, including establishment and ongoing fees. ASB removed its loan processing fee from 16 February 2026, so a slightly lower interest rate elsewhere may still produce a higher total cost if fees outweigh the interest saving.

How much can I consolidate, and what does a longer ASB loan term cost?

ASB publishes a $2,000 minimum and terms from 6 months to 7 years; its checked product pages do not specify a maximum. Compare your approved amount with the full settlement figures for your existing debts, including exit charges.

Illustration: At 13.90% p.a., $10,000 repaid over three years costs approximately $341.29 monthly and $12,286 in total. Over seven years, this becomes approximately $186.85 monthly and $15,695 in total. These calculations assume equal monthly payments, monthly interest at the annual rate divided by 12, and no fees, insurance or missed payments. ASB calculates interest daily, so its actual schedule may differ.

Can ASB combine all my debts, including an existing ASB personal loan?

No. ASB specifically excludes existing ASB personal loans and borrowing from friends or family. Its consolidation page lists credit cards, store cards, hire purchase and car loans as potential uses, subject to approval. If an excluded debt makes up much of your borrowing, ASB may leave you managing more than one repayment. Also check whether moving interest-free or lower-rate balances into the new loan would increase their cost.

Why might ASB decline consolidation even if the new repayment is lower?

A lower proposed instalment does not establish that the loan meets ASB’s lending criteria. Its assessment guidance considers income consistency, account conduct, employment circumstances, other debts and credit history. ASB describes a clear credit history as essential. Existing defaults, repeated overdrawing or unstable income can therefore matter even where consolidation appears to improve your monthly budget. Ask which issue needs addressing before making another application.

Can a work-visa holder access ASB’s full seven-year repayment term?

Only if the visa duration and ASB’s other criteria allow it. ASB requires the loan to finish at least one month before the work visa expires. A shorter permitted term means higher repayments for the same amount, which can affect affordability and the amount approved. Compare lenders using the term each would actually offer you. Visitor visas are not eligible for ASB lending.

Do I need to switch banks to consolidate debt with ASB?

You can approach ASB as a new customer, but its repayment guidance requires an ASB transaction account for fortnightly or monthly deductions. ASB says it can open one when arranging the loan. This does not, by itself, establish a requirement to move all your banking or salary. Confirm any account fees and salary-crediting conditions in your offer, particularly if you intend to fund repayments from another bank.

Can I keep paying my previous repayment amount to clear the ASB loan faster?

ASB advertises extra repayments and early settlement without fees or charges. If consolidation lowers your required payment, maintaining a higher affordable payment can reduce interest and shorten repayment. Its early-repayment guidance supports this flexibility. Confirm the treatment of additional payments in your agreement and ask how to maintain the higher payment after a lump-sum reduction. Compare this feature with any repayment restrictions or settlement charges in competing offers.

Is the loan unsecured if ASB already holds a mortgage over my home?

ASB advertises an unsecured consolidation product, but its general loan terms include provisions extending existing security to other borrowing unless agreed otherwise. If ASB already holds a mortgage or another security, obtain written confirmation of whether it also secures this loan. This matters when comparing offers: a similar repayment does not mean the same exposure for your property. The specific agreement and security documents determine your position.

What support and independent recourse are available if repayment problems arise?

ASB’s Financial Assistance team can assess changed circumstances on 0800 27 27 35, option 3, or at financialassistance@asb.co.nz. It requests information about income and outgoings. Before accepting revised payments, ask how the arrangement changes interest, total repayment and the finishing date; a reduced payment is not necessarily a reduction in debt.

For unresolved concerns, follow ASB’s complaints process. Its Early Resolve team is available on 0800 272 005. After giving ASB an opportunity to resolve the issue, the independent Banking Ombudsman Scheme may be able to help free of charge on 0800 805 950.
