Instant Finance
Compare Instant Finance short-term loans in NZ, from $500. Review interest rates, fees, repayment terms and eligibility. Subject to approval.
Review basis: Checked on 14 October 2026 against Instant Finance’s official cash loan information, rates and fees, fee schedule dated 1 March 2026, application guide, FAQs and published credit contract. This review assesses its standard cash loan for short-term borrowing; the separate Fast $500 promotion is explained below. Promotional availability and conflicting default-rate wording require confirmation. No application was submitted or personalised quotation obtained. Suitability assessments and the labelled calculation are editorial analysis.
Instant Finance short-term loan review
- Provider and purpose: Instant Finance Limited is a direct New Zealand lender. Its cash loan can cover a one-off expense and be repaid over a shorter term.
- Amounts and terms: Standard cash loans range from NZ$500 to NZ$50,000, typically over 3 months to 7 years, subject to assessment. A multi-year agreement creates a longer commitment even when the expense is urgent.
- Interest and APR: Personalised interest is 9.95%–29.95% p.a., fixed for the agreed term. These rates exclude fees; a separate fee-inclusive APR was not identified in the reviewed pricing.
- Standard fees: Establishment costs $100 for up to $500 in new borrowing or $220 above $500, plus applicable identity and security charges. Administration costs $3 per scheduled instalment.
- Security and insurance: Secured and unsecured lending are available subject to assessment. Vehicle security requires comprehensive insurance. Payment protection insurance is an optional additional cost.
- Eligibility and application: Applicants must be at least 18, live in New Zealand and pass affordability and credit assessments. Some work-visa holders qualify. Apply directly online or through a branch.
- Funding: The lender says approved cash loans are usually paid the same day or within 24 hours. Assessment and documentation must be completed first.
- Assessment: Branch assistance and individual assessment may be useful, but fixed fees can make small, short loans expensive. The separate Fast $500 promotion has different pricing and conditions.
Alexander Balanoff on Instant Finance
With Instant Finance, I would treat repayment frequency as part of the price. A fee charged per instalment means weekly repayments can accumulate more fees than monthly repayments, even if paying more often reduces interest. Ask for the total repayment for the same cash amount and term at each available frequency. At LoansFinder, we encourage this comparison because the payment schedule can change both the cost and how comfortably a loan fits your budget. Any saving needs to work with your pay cycle, leaving enough for essentials between repayments.
Who qualifies for an Instant Finance loan?
Applicants must be at least 18 and living in New Zealand. Citizens and residents can apply; work-visa holders may qualify where the loan ends before their visa expires. Approval depends on income, expenses, existing commitments, credit history and any security required.
Prepare the following:
- Identification: A current driver licence or passport. Ask about branch-based alternatives if you do not have either.
- Address and income: Recent address evidence, income verification and approximately three months of bank transactions. Self-employed applicants may need accounts or tax information; benefit recipients may need their entitlement details.
- Security documents, if requested: Asset ownership, value and insurance information. The lender may need to inspect a vehicle offered as security.
Benefit income, self-employment or previous credit problems do not automatically rule out an application. They also do not remove the requirement to demonstrate affordable repayments.
When short-term borrowing may make sense
This loan may suit someone with a specific, one-off expense and enough surplus income to repay it within a defined period. Branch assistance can help applicants who need to explain irregular income or provide additional documents.
Reconsider if borrowing would cover a recurring gap between income and essential spending, or if repayment depends on another loan. Explore a payment arrangement with the bill provider and help with managing existing debt. Compare other short-term borrowing options and personal loans using the same cash amount and repayment period.
How the application and repayments work
Application process
- Apply through Instant Finance’s official application or a branch, stating the amount, purpose, income and contact details.
- Provide identification and financial information. The lender assesses affordability, credit history and any proposed security.
- Review the written offer, including cash received, financed charges, repayment frequency, insurance and total repayment.
- Accept only after checking the conditions. Weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments may be available.
The lender’s privacy policy describes credit reporting and information sharing. An application can appear on your credit file; comparing information or using a calculator is different from submitting an application.
How quickly could the money arrive?
Instant Finance aims for a same-day response. Its cash loan page says funds are usually available the same day or within 24 hours after approval. Missing documents or further assessment can extend the process, so this is not a deadline measured from submitting the form.
Questions to settle before accepting
- How much cash will I receive, and what is the total repayment including every financed charge?
- Would a different repayment frequency change the total administration fees and interest?
- Is security required, and what insurance must I maintain?
- Which protection products are optional, and what do they exclude?
- What default interest, missed-payment charges and early-settlement costs apply to this specific agreement?
Advantages and limitations
- Fixed interest: The agreed rate stays fixed, making the scheduled borrowing cost easier to plan.
- Application support: Online and branch channels accommodate different documentation needs.
- Broad assessment: Credit history is considered alongside present circumstances and affordability.
- Small-loan cost: Establishment and instalment fees can outweigh interest over a short term.
- Security risk: Assets pledged for a secured loan may be repossessed and sold following default. Insurance adds to the household cost.
Instant Finance interest, fees and total cost
Standard interest ranges from 9.95% to 29.95% p.a. Your rate depends on the assessment and remains fixed once agreed. Upfront charges added to the balance also attract interest. Compare the total repayment with the cash received.
| Standard loan charge | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Establishment | $100 for up to $500 in new borrowing; $220 above $500. |
| Identity verification | $2.55 face to face or $7.70 remotely, per person. |
| Administration | $3 per scheduled instalment. |
| Personal property security registration | $8.05 automatically or $16.10 manually, where applicable. |
| Full early repayment | $25; unused interest and administration fees are rebated. |
| Formal contract variation | $50 where applicable. |
The 1 March 2026 schedule describes maximum fees, which may sometimes be lower. If land security is proposed, it also lists $455 registration and $447 discharge charges for mortgages or caveats, subject to third-party costs.
Illustration: $1,000 repaid over 13 weeks
Original calculation, not a quotation: Assume one borrower receives $1,000 at an illustrative 19.95% p.a., with a $220 establishment fee and $7.70 remote identity fee financed. The opening balance is $1,227.70. Using weekly interest of 19.95% divided by 52 and adding $3 per instalment gives approximately 12 payments of $99.99 and a final payment of $100.04.
Total repayment: approximately $1,299.92, comprising $1,000 received, $266.70 in fees and $33.22 interest. This assumes regular weekly periods, on-time payments and no security, insurance, variation or default charges. Actual dates and rounding may change the result. Here, fees account for most of the borrowing cost.
Insurance and optional protection
Comprehensive insurance is required when a vehicle secures the loan. Include that premium in affordability calculations even if paid separately. The published contract treats payment protection insurance and a repayment waiver as optional additions.
Obtain the current price and wording before choosing either. The published waiver excludes existing conditions and excludes self-employment and voluntary redundancy from redundancy protection. Waiver terms are distinct from an insurance policy; check the selected product’s eligibility, exclusions and waiting periods.
Late payments and default charges
The rates page states a 5% p.a. default rate on overdue payments for personal loans written after 1 March 2026. Other pages retain a 39.95% maximum statement. Obtain written clarification of the rate applicable to your agreement and how it interacts with ordinary interest.
For loans written after 1 March 2026, the schedule lists a $7.50 weekly arrears-management fee once the loan is at least seven days overdue. Other potential charges include $5 for an unpaid item, $45 for a default notice and applicable recovery or repossession costs.
The separate Fast $500 promotion
The Fast $500 offer advertises an unsecured $500 loan for up to 92 days at 0% interest, with a $95 establishment fee and no administration fee: $595 repayable on schedule. Early repayment carries no additional charge, and only one Fast $500 balance may be outstanding.
However, the displayed terms carry a 31 May 2019 version date, restrict availability to promotional periods without current dates, and specify 39.95% p.a. default interest on overdue payments. Confirm availability and current default terms. If offered a standard secured loan instead, its pricing differs. The $95 fee equals 19% of the cash borrowed; that is a one-off cost comparison, not an annualised APR.
Is Instant Finance suitable for a short-term loan?
Instant Finance’s strongest feature is access to branch assistance and individual assessment. Its main limitation for a small, short loan is the weight of fixed fees. Compare the written total for the exact amount needed over the shortest affordable term, including insurance and any settlement charge. A manageable instalment alone does not establish good value.
Instant Finance short-term loan FAQs
How does Fast $500 compare with a standard Instant Finance cash loan?
They have different pricing. Standard cash loans start at $500, with terms from three months, personalised interest and ongoing fees. The separate Fast $500 promotion advertises an unsecured $500 loan for up to 92 days, with 0% interest, a $95 establishment fee and no administration fee: $595 repayable on schedule. However, its displayed terms carry a 2019 version date, specify 39.95% p.a. default interest on overdue payments and omit current promotional dates. Confirm availability and current conditions before comparing it with another offer.
Why can borrowing slightly more than $500 increase the cost substantially?
The standard establishment fee rises from $100 for up to $500 in new borrowing to $220 above $500. At those scheduled fees, borrowing $600 instead of $500 adds $120 in establishment charges for just $100 more cash, before interest and other costs. This makes the fee threshold particularly relevant to small loans. Compare quotations for the amount actually needed; Fast $500 has separate promotional pricing.
Are weekly repayments cheaper than monthly repayments?
Not necessarily. Standard Instant Finance loans charge $3 per scheduled instalment, so more frequent repayments create more administration charges. As a fee-only illustration, 13 weekly instalments incur $39 in administration fees, while three monthly instalments incur $9. Interest also changes with repayment timing. Ask for the total repayment at each available frequency, using the same amount and term, before choosing a schedule that fits your income.
Does accepting bad-credit applications mean Instant Finance skips credit checks?
No. A previous default is not an automatic decline, but Instant Finance considers credit history alongside current affordability and any security. Its cash loan application is recorded on your credit file and may affect your score. When comparing borrowing options with an impaired credit history, ask whether an initial price indication requires a recorded application. Being eligible to apply does not establish the rate or amount you will receive.
Can I qualify with benefit income or self-employed earnings?
Yes, both can be considered. Instant Finance accepts benefit-based income and may use annual accounts or bank statements to assess self-employed applicants. Prepare benefit or income evidence and approximately three months of bank transactions. For comparison purposes, establish which income the lender will count and what evidence it requires before submitting an application, particularly if your earnings fluctuate or combine several sources.
Can an online application still require a branch visit before payout?
Yes. Instant Finance says many applications can be completed online and by phone, but some require a branch visit. Its FAQs specifically identify an in-person completion route for applicants without a driver licence or passport. The advertised same-day or within-24-hours payout generally follows approval. If timing determines your choice of lender, confirm whether your identification and documents can be accepted remotely before relying on that timeframe.
Could a secured offer cost more overall than an unsecured loan?
It could, even if the interest rate is lower. Instant Finance may offer secured or unsecured lending following assessment. Vehicle security brings registration charges and a requirement to maintain comprehensive vehicle insurance. Compare any additional insurance expense and security charges alongside interest, and consider the risk of losing the vehicle following default. Payment protection insurance is a separate optional product; it should not be confused with required vehicle cover.
If I expect to repay early, which costs would I actually save?
For standard loans, Instant Finance says unused interest and administration fees are rebated, with a $25 fee for full early repayment. Do not assume the establishment fee is refunded: it is not included in that stated rebate. Ask for a settlement illustration at your expected repayment date and compare it with a shorter agreement from the outset. Fast $500 separately advertises early repayment without an additional charge.
Should I request a top-up or repayment help if the loan becomes difficult to manage?
Instant Finance may assess additional borrowing as a separate loan or combine it with an existing balance. A top-up therefore needs comparison against the repayments already outstanding: establish how much extra cash you receive, the additional total repayment and the new finish date. If the problem is meeting existing payments, contact your branch or 0800 760 000 about repayment support before taking on further debt.
For unresolved concerns about charges or treatment, follow the lender’s formal complaints process. Its stated independent dispute-resolution service is the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme, available free on 0800 888 202.
