Review basis: Checked on 21 October 2026 against Kiwibank’s business loan information, application guidance, Fast Capital eligibility and FAQs, published rates and fees, fee brochure effective 1 July 2026 and facility terms effective 1 December 2025. Security, guarantee, privacy and complaints information was also inspected and is linked below. Rates and approval remain personalised; no application or individual quotation was tested. The website and brochure describe the extra-repayment allowance differently; see the discrepancy below. Suitability comments are editorial assessments.
Kiwibank business loans: summary
- Provider and purpose: Kiwibank Limited is a direct lender listed on the Reserve Bank’s registered-bank register. Its business lending supports business investment and cashflow needs.
- Amounts and terms: Borrowing is assessed individually. Fast Capital accepts requests from NZ$5,000 to NZ$1 million across eligible business lending products; this is an application-channel range, not a universal business-loan limit. Larger requests go through a specialist. Advertised loan terms are six months to five years, sometimes longer.
- Interest and APR: Fixed and variable options are available. Rates depend on the borrower, loan terms and security. The checked sources do not publish a standard business-loan rate range or fee-inclusive APR.
- Fees: The loan application fee has a NZ$25 minimum, not a NZ$25 cap. Conditional early-exit, fixed-rate break, security and other charges can increase the cost.
- Security and insurance: Lending may be secured against business or personal assets. Business and asset insurance obligations apply under the terms; premiums depend on the required cover. A personal guarantee may create additional personal liability.
- Eligibility and application: Kiwibank assesses repayment capacity and supporting information, with credit and identity checks. Apply through a business banking specialist or Fast Capital if its company and accounting-data requirements are met.
- Suitability and main limitation: Worth considering for businesses with a clear funding purpose and credible repayment forecasts. Its repayment choices are useful, but price and personal exposure cannot be judged until the full offer is available.
Alexander Balanoff on Kiwibank
A business can show a profit while its cash is tied up in unpaid invoices. When comparing a Kiwibank business loan, I would test whether repayments still work if a major customer pays a month late. That reveals how much breathing room the business has before repayments start drawing on your household budget. At LoansFinder, we encourage borrowers to compare repayment timing, total cost and personal exposure together. If your home or a personal guarantee supports the borrowing, the decision belongs in your household’s financial planning as well as your business forecast.
Kiwibank business loan eligibility and documents
Kiwibank assesses the business’s finances, funding purpose, existing borrowing and proposed security. Its application guidance requests a business plan and cashflow forecast; if these are not formally documented, discuss the requirements with a specialist.
- Financial evidence: Latest accountant-prepared annual accounts and a personal financial statement covering income, living costs, assets and debts.
- Supporting documents: Relevant contracts, insurance policies, purchase or lease agreements and registered valuations, where applicable.
- Verification: Expect credit, identity and address checks. Kiwibank’s Privacy Notice explains its use of credit agencies and verification services.
Fast Capital has separate entry requirements: the applicant must be a director of a New Zealand registered limited company using Xero or MYOB Business Lite, Pro or AccountRight, with at least 12 months of accurate, current financial data. Appropriate access permissions are required: Xero Standard or Advisor, or MYOB Standard Administrator or Owner. These are channel requirements, not a published minimum trading history for every Kiwibank business loan.
Who should consider Kiwibank business finance?
Our assessment is that Kiwibank is most useful to borrowers who can explain how the funding will generate cash to repay it. Match the repayment period to the investment’s useful life and allow for quieter trading months. A repayment that fits the annual forecast can still strain the business during a seasonal downturn.
For a defined purchase, compare a term loan with asset finance. For a temporary gap between paying suppliers and collecting invoices, consider whether an overdraft better matches the need. These products have different fees and repayment conditions; compare business funding options on the same amount and expected borrowing period.
Reconsider borrowing if it mainly covers continuing losses without a credible recovery plan. Also weigh any proposed home security against the consequences for your household if business income falls.
How to apply for a Kiwibank business loan
Application and assessment

- Provide the requested financial information. Fast Capital requires authorisation to access summarised accounting data; review the privacy terms before connecting your account.
- If approved, review the offer, loan documents, security requirements and any guarantees with your advisers.
- Return signed documents and satisfy the funding conditions. Kiwibank then arranges settlement and makes funds available to you or your lawyer.
Business banking enquiries: 0800 601 601, Monday to Friday, 8 am–5 pm, as published on Kiwibank’s business banking page.
Decision time versus access to funds
Fast Capital advertises an application taking up to 10 minutes and an emailed decision within five minutes. Further information may be needed. Kiwibank aims to provide access to approved borrowing within a few business days, potentially longer for new customers. A rapid decision does not mean immediate payment.
Questions to resolve before accepting an offer
- What are the regular repayments, total scheduled repayment and any final lump sum? What happens when a fixed-rate or interest-only period ends?
- What application, legal, valuation, insurance and account costs apply, and which will be added to the borrowing?
- Exactly which assets secure the facility? Kiwibank’s security terms can cover other current and future obligations unless otherwise agreed.
- If a personal guarantee is required, is liability capped? Under the guarantee terms, Kiwibank can seek payment from the guarantor without first pursuing the borrower.
- Which financial covenants—agreed financial limits—and reporting duties apply? Ask how restrictions on further borrowing or asset sales affect your plans.
- What extra repayments can you make without charges, and what would full repayment cost on your likely exit date?
Kiwibank business loan advantages and limitations
- Repayment choice: Fixed, variable and interest-only arrangements allow different approaches to cashflow. Interest-only payments leave the principal outstanding.
- Digital assessment: Eligible companies can obtain an early lending decision using existing accounting data.
- Pricing requires a quote: Public information cannot establish whether Kiwibank will be cheaper than another lender for your business.
- Security has consequences: Default can lead to enforcement against pledged assets, including a home if mortgaged for the facility.
- Early repayment needs checking: Several charges may apply, and the published extra-payment allowance needs clarification.
Kiwibank business loan interest, fees and total cost
There is no verified standard rate to insert into a repayment calculator. Request your personalised annual interest rate, repayment schedule and itemised charges. A quoted interest rate excludes costs that may materially change the comparison.
- Application: Minimum NZ$25 for a new or increased business loan; confirm the actual fee.
- Early exit: NZ$250 when a loan repayable over more than three years is fully repaid within three years of first drawdown.
- Fixed-rate break cost: May apply to full early repayment, additional payments exceeding the allowance, or switching the fixed rate. The amount varies.
- Security discharge: NZ$35 per mortgage or security, plus another NZ$35 for qualifying refinancing discharges requested in fewer than five business days.
- Changes: NZ$25 per changed loan for specified lending restructures; NZ$135 per request for a security restructure.
- Default: The published term-loan default rate is the usual rate plus five percentage points annually on applicable overdue amounts. A NZ$25 demand fee and recovery costs may also apply.
These figures concern business lending, not the separate asset-finance fee schedule. Check the rates and fees page and July 2026 brochure against your offer. The webpage still carries an effective-date statement of 1 December 2020.
The extra-repayment allowance needs written confirmation
The July 2026 brochure describes an annual allowance of 5% of the balance at the start of the fixed term, with examples using anniversary years. The live webpage instead refers to 5% of the outstanding balance when paying, less extra payments already made in the current calendar year. These calculations can produce different allowances. Ask Kiwibank to confirm your available dollar amount and reset date in writing before making extra payments.
Insurance and other conditional costs
The facility terms require insurance appropriate to the business and its assets. Where the security terms apply, secured property generally needs comprehensive replacement-value cover, with Kiwibank’s interest recorded, unless otherwise agreed. Include premiums and any required valuations or legal work in your budget. Check policy exclusions and excesses; insuring an asset does not establish that ordinary trading losses or missed repayments are covered.
Illustrative repayment calculation
Independent illustration, not Kiwibank pricing: NZ$50,000 repaid over 36 months at an assumed fixed annual interest rate of 10%, using monthly interest and equal monthly payments, produces approximately NZ$1,613.36 per month. Total principal and interest would be approximately NZ$58,080.94, including NZ$8,080.94 interest. This excludes application fees, insurance, legal and valuation costs, account charges and early-repayment costs. It assumes timely payments and no rate changes; rounding may alter the final payment. Kiwibank calculates interest daily, so an actual schedule would differ.
Is a Kiwibank business loan worth considering?
Kiwibank merits comparison where a business needs a repayment structure matched to its cashflow. That flexibility is its strongest feature; the main limitation is that public pricing cannot reveal the final cost. Compare written offers using the same amount, repayment period and intended exit date, then weigh the cost against the assets and personal guarantees required.
Kiwibank business loan FAQs
How much can I borrow, and does Fast Capital provide a business term loan?
Fast Capital accepts borrowing requests from NZ$5,000 to NZ$1 million, subject to assessment. It is an application channel covering term loans, overdrafts, credit cards and asset finance; approval does not automatically mean a term loan. Kiwibank discusses the appropriate product or combination afterwards. Contact a specialist for larger requests, and compare the resulting facility’s conditions rather than treating every Fast Capital approval as the same product.
How can I compare Kiwibank’s interest rate with another business lender?
Kiwibank quotes rates individually according to your circumstances, loan terms and security, so there is no verified standard rate that establishes whether it is cheaper. Compare written offers for the same amount, repayment period and security arrangement, including total repayments, application fees, required insurance and legal costs. Kiwibank’s published loan application fee starts at NZ$25; that is a minimum, not the full fee promised to every borrower.
Can sole traders, trusts or start-ups apply for a Kiwibank business loan?
Fast Capital’s restrictions do not define eligibility for all Kiwibank business lending. The digital channel excludes sole traders, partnerships and trusts. It requires a company director, a New Zealand registered limited company and at least 12 months of accurate, current Xero or supported MYOB data, with appropriate access permissions. Businesses outside these Fast Capital criteria should discuss a specialist assessment rather than assume they cannot apply.
Must I already bank with Kiwibank, and how quickly could I receive funding?
No existing Kiwibank relationship is required to apply through Fast Capital. It advertises an emailed decision within five minutes, but a lending decision is separate from access to money. Kiwibank aims to make approved borrowing available within a few business days, potentially longer for new customers completing the joining process. For a purchase deadline, compare lenders’ expected settlement dates and outstanding conditions, not just their advertised decision times.
Could a Kiwibank business loan put my home or other personal assets at risk?
Yes, if personal assets secure the facility; a personal guarantee can also create personal liability. Under Kiwibank’s standard guarantee terms, it can seek payment from a guarantor without first pursuing the borrower, and further borrowing may be covered. When comparing offers, check the assets pledged, the guarantee’s scope and any liability cap. A lower interest rate needs to be weighed against that exposure, with independent legal advice before signing.
What could early repayment cost if I sell an asset or refinance?
Kiwibank lists a NZ$250 early-exit fee where a loan repayable over more than three years is fully repaid within three years of first drawdown. Fixed-rate break costs may also apply, so NZ$250 is not necessarily the total exit cost. Its website and brochure describe the extra-repayment allowance differently; see the published allowance discrepancy. Request your remaining allowance and a dated settlement quote before comparing refinancing savings or using sale proceeds to repay.
Is a Kiwibank term loan or revolving facility better for uneven cashflow?
For comparison purposes, consider a term loan for a defined expense repaid over time, and revolving credit where borrowing repeatedly rises and falls. Kiwibank’s revolving facility allows reborrowing within the limit, but unused capacity can still cost money: its published non-utilisation fee is 0.6% annually on the unused portion, calculated daily and charged monthly. The facility terms also make revolving loans repayable on demand. Compare availability, unused-limit charges and repayment rights alongside interest.
Can Kiwibank reduce repayments if my business has a difficult trading period?
Kiwibank’s financial support information describes possible interest-only arrangements and repayment deferrals, subject to assessment. These should not be treated as an automatic payment holiday. Ask for the revised repayment schedule and total cost, including whether interest continues, any restructuring fee and the balance due afterwards. Contact your business banker before missing a payment; an informal discussion does not itself change the agreed repayment obligations.
Can I challenge a declined application, unexpected fee or lending-service problem?
Ask Kiwibank to explain the decision or charge, then use its complaints process or call 0800 333 239 if unresolved. The Banking Ombudsman Scheme offers free independent assistance within its scope, but excludes complaints about commercial lending judgement, interest-rate policies or the size of standard fees. How a fee was disclosed or applied is a different issue from simply considering it too expensive. Keep the offer, agreement and relevant correspondence.
