Superloans
Compare Superloans short-term loans in NZ: interest rates, fees, eligibility and the first-loan offer up to $500. Subject to approval.
Review basis: Researched on 14 October 2026 using Superloans’ official Express Loan, Free Loan, costs, FAQs, terms, application form and privacy policy. This review covers unsecured Express borrowing for short-term needs; Pawn Loans are a separate product.
Official pages disagree on borrowing limits and several fees, and the published repayment example contains an arithmetic discrepancy. No pricing effective date was identified. These limitations are explained below; no personalised quotation was obtained. Current registration and licensing were not independently confirmed. Suitability comments are editorial assessments, not findings that a particular loan is affordable.
Superloans short-term loan review: Express borrowing
- Provider: Superloans offers loans directly through its New Zealand business and branches. Its website cites FSP94021; confirm the contracting company and its current status before signing.
- Amounts: Eligible first-time customers can receive a Free Loan of up to $500. For standard Express borrowing, the homepage advertises $500–$2,000 for new customers, while the product page advertises $500–$5,000. The applicable limit needs confirmation.
- Repayment term: The Express FAQs state 12–185 weeks, so the product is not exclusively short-term. Confirm the promotional loan’s separate repayment schedule.
- Interest and APR: The Free Loan promotion advertises 0% interest and no fees. Standard Express rates are advertised at 29.95%–49.95% annually, personalised by loan amount and Superscore. The published 31.60% APR belongs to a longer-term example with unresolved inconsistencies, not every loan.
- Fees: The costs page lists $150 establishment, $10 every 28 days and $1.10 per scheduled direct debit, plus conditional charges. Conflicting FAQ figures require a written fee schedule.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18. Express criteria include income of at least $400 weekly after tax, credit and affordability checks, and Wellington or Hawke’s Bay residence for first-time borrowing.
- Security and insurance: Express Loans are unsecured. No compulsory insurance requirement was identified in the inspected product, costs or terms pages; confirm this in the agreement.
- Application: Start online or through a branch. First-time borrowers must visit a branch to sign.
- Best fit and main limitation: The introductory offer may suit an eligible local borrower with a small, temporary shortfall. Standard borrowing needs closer comparison because fees weigh heavily on small loans and published details are inconsistent.
Alexander Balanoff on Superloans
With Superloans’ first-loan offer, I would look beyond the final repayment to what your next payday needs to cover. If repaying the loan leaves you needing another advance for ordinary bills, the introductory saving may simply postpone the cost of borrowing. Map the instalments alongside rent, groceries and less frequent expenses to see whether the shortfall actually disappears. At LoansFinder, we encourage that wider comparison: the total repayment and whether your budget works afterwards. The offer is most useful when it helps you clear a one-off expense without creating a recurring need for credit.
Who qualifies for a Superloans Express Loan?
The published criteria require:
- Age 18 or over and, for a first loan, residence in Wellington or Hawke’s Bay.
- At least $400 a week after tax from accepted salary, wages or benefits, paid into an account in your name.
- Internet banking access, your phone number and an alternative contact number.
- At least 30 days in your current job if employed.
- Accepted photo identification and proof of address.
Prepare income details and bank transaction information, plus MyMSD access if applicable. The application also requires you to declare that you are not an undischarged bankrupt or subject to the specified insolvency proceedings.
Meeting these conditions does not establish affordability. Superloans assesses your financial position and conducts credit checks. Its privacy policy describes bank-data analysis and information sharing with credit reporting agencies, including payment history, arrears and defaults.
When short-term borrowing may make sense
The Free Loan may suit a first-time customer who needs no more than $500 for a one-off expense and can repay within the agreed schedule. Its value depends on resolving the shortfall without needing another loan afterwards.
For paid borrowing, compare using the same amount and repayment period. If repayment will take many months, also compare . A smaller instalment can conceal a substantially longer commitment.
Reconsider borrowing if repayments would leave essentials unpaid or require another advance. Asking the bill provider for a payment arrangement may address the immediate problem without adding a loan.
Pawn Loans are different: Superloans’ Pawn Loan requires an item as security and advertises a three-month term without credit checks. The item may be sold if it is not redeemed or the agreement extended. Those conditions do not describe an unsecured Express Loan.
How the Superloans application works
Application and assessment
- Use the official Express application or contact a branch. Specify whether you are seeking the Free Loan promotion.
- Provide identity, income and banking information. Read the consent terms before authorising access to financial data.
- Answer any questions from the credit team and obtain the proposed repayment schedule.
- Check the initial disclosure and agreement, including the lender’s legal name, charges and total repayment. First-time borrowers sign in person.
- Following approval and completion, funds can be transferred to your account or collected as cash where arranged.
Application estimates are indicative and do not constitute a credit agreement. Existing customers can manage balances and payments through My Superloans.
Approval and payout timing
The FAQs describe processing as typically four to five hours; the product page advertises access to funds within an hour after approval. These are separate stages. Allow for document checks, branch attendance, opening hours and bank processing before relying on same-day funds.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
- Does my agreement qualify for the Free Loan, and could late payment or an extension introduce charges?
- Which advertised borrowing limit applies to me?
- Which fee schedule is current, and why does it differ from the website FAQs?
- How much cash will I receive, what is the financed balance, and what is the total repayment?
- Are fees added to the balance and charged interest? Is any insurance required or proposed?
- What would settlement cost on my intended repayment date?
- Which legal company is lending, and which independent dispute resolution scheme covers it?
Superloans advantages and limitations
Advantages
- The introductory offer removes interest and fees for qualifying borrowing up to its promotional limit.
- Express borrowing does not require an asset as security.
- Accepted benefit income can support an application, subject to assessment.
- Local branches provide an in-person application and support route.
Limitations
- First-time borrowing requires regional eligibility and a branch visit.
- Published limits, fee schedules and example figures do not fully agree.
- Standard charges can make a small advance expensive, even when repaid relatively quickly.
- A longer term can turn a temporary expense into an extended repayment commitment.
Regulatory history: A Commerce Commission case concerning Superloans Wellington Limited and Superloans Porirua Limited closed on 18 October 2024 with a warning letter about likely breaches involving affordability and suitability records. This was a historical warning, not a court finding or an assessment of every current loan.
Superloans interest, fees and total borrowing cost
The first-loan promotion
The promotional terms offer eligible new customers up to $500 with no interest or fees, at Superloans’ discretion. A qualifying $500 advance therefore has a scheduled repayment total of $500. Confirm the payment dates and consequences of any departure from the agreed schedule.
Standard Express charges
The costs page advertises fixed interest of 29.95%–49.95% annually and lists:
- Routine charges: $150 establishment; $10 administration every 28 days; $1.10 per scheduled direct debit.
- Other payments: $3 per manual or non-scheduled payment; $20 for early repayment in full.
- Changes: $20 per contract variation; $10 per payment adjustment.
- Arrears: $10 per defaulted payment; $20 every 28 days while overdue.
Unresolved fee differences: The FAQs instead list establishment fees of $0–$145, manual payments at $5 and overdue charges of $30 every 28 days, among other differences. Neither page provides a clear effective date establishing which schedule applies. Obtain written confirmation.
Cost illustration: A $150 establishment charge equals 15% of a $1,000 advance before interest and ongoing charges. This calculation illustrates the fee’s impact; it is not a repayment quotation. A 28-day administration cycle is also shorter than a calendar month.
Published repayment example: discrepancies to resolve
Superloans’ website gives an Express example of $15,000 at 29.95% annual interest, a $150 establishment fee and $1.10 per direct debit. It states 156 weekly payments of $150.77, total repayment of $23,529.96 and APR of 31.60%, assuming no failed payments.
Our arithmetic check: 156 × $150.77 equals $23,520.12, which is $9.84 below the stated total. The example does not explain how the separately listed administration fee is treated. It is also a longer-term example, not a quote for a new customer’s short-term loan. Its stated APR should not be applied to another amount or term.
No compulsory insurance charge was identified in the inspected disclosures. If insurance is proposed, request its premium, exclusions and optional or compulsory status before comparing the final total.
Is Superloans worth considering for a short-term loan?
The strongest feature is the qualifying first-loan promotion. For standard Express borrowing, the main limitation is the combination of substantial charges and inconsistent public disclosures. Compare the total cost of receiving the same cash amount over the same term, using a written offer that resolves the discrepancies. Approval speed alone is insufficient grounds for choosing it.
Superloans short-term loan FAQs
Is the first Superloans loan free, or does the offer have limits?
The promotion offers up to $500 without interest or fees to qualifying customers who have not previously borrowed from any Superloans branch. The approved amount remains discretionary. Do not assume that a larger first loan qualifies, or that its first $500 is automatically interest-free. Before comparing this offer with paid borrowing, confirm that your agreement includes the promotion and explains any consequences of late payment or an extension.
How should I compare Superloans’ cost with another short-term lender?
Compare the same cash amount received and the same repayment period. Superloans’ costs page lists a $150 establishment fee, $10 administration every 28 days and $1.10 per scheduled direct debit for standard Express borrowing. The establishment fee alone equals 15% of a $1,000 advance, before interest. Some FAQ charges differ, so obtain a written breakdown. Compare the total payable, including separately collected fees, rather than choosing by the advertised interest rate alone.
Can I get a Superloans loan with bad credit or without a credit check?
Express Loans require credit checks, although adverse credit does not automatically exclude an applicant. The no-credit-check option is a separate Pawn Loan secured by an item of value. This changes the repayment risk: the pawn principal must be repaid as a lump sum, and paying extension charges does not reduce it. The item may be sold if you do not redeem it or arrange an extension. Compare the full redemption cost before treating pawning as a cheaper alternative.
Is Superloans suitable if I only need money for a few weeks?
The standard Express FAQs publish terms of 12–185 weeks, so an Express Loan is not necessarily a loan you clear on your next payday. The Free Loan promotion’s schedule needs separate confirmation. If you expect to repay within a few weeks, request a settlement estimate for that date before accepting a longer contract. For borrowing over several months, compare ; a short-term need does not necessarily justify a short-term lender’s pricing.
Can benefit income qualify, or do I also need employment?
Superloans accepts qualifying benefit income towards its published $400 weekly after-tax income requirement; employment is not the only accepted income source. Income must be paid directly into an account in your name, and other criteria still apply. The 30-day employment requirement applies if you are employed. For comparison purposes, distinguish a lender accepting your income type from approving your budget: Superloans still assesses whether repayments fit alongside living costs and existing commitments.
Can I apply from anywhere in New Zealand and receive the money online?
First-time Express applicants must live in Wellington or Hawke’s Bay and visit a branch to sign, even when applying online. Existing customers who have moved outside those regions may apply again through My Superloans, subject to assessment. This regional restriction matters when comparing nationwide online lenders. Superloans advertises funding within an hour after approval; that does not include the full application process, document checks or your first branch visit.
Will paying a Superloans loan early save money after fees?
Early settlement can reduce future interest and ongoing charges, but the saving depends on your agreement and settlement date. The costs page lists a $20 fee for repaying a standard Express Loan in full early, plus a separate manual-payment charge; ask which charges apply to your payment method. Compare a dated settlement quote with all payments otherwise remaining. The Free Loan FAQs state that early repayment carries no extra fee, so the standard settlement charge should not be assumed to apply to that promotion.
Can I postpone a payment, and is that different from hardship assistance?
Yes, but Superloans’ routine postponement facility has conditions: its FAQs say payments must be up to date and at least 90 days must have passed since the previous postponement request. That facility is separate from requesting hardship assistance, which may involve changed payments or a longer term. Ask for the revised total repayment and any charges before agreeing. If shortfalls recur, consider before using another advance to cover instalments.
Who can resolve a disputed fee or repayment problem?
For account or application queries, email creditteam@superloans.co.nz or use the branch contact directory. Wellington’s number is 04 801 6452. For a formal complaint, write to complaints@superloans.co.nz, identify the disputed transaction and attach the relevant quotation, agreement or statement. State the outcome you want, such as an explanation or fee reversal.
Superloans’ hardship FAQs direct unresolved concerns to the Financial Dispute Resolution Service on 0508 337 337. Confirm coverage for the legal lender named in your agreement before escalating.
