Finance Now bad credit loan review: eligibility, rates and costs

  • Provider and product: Finance Now Limited is a New Zealand lender within the SBS Bank group. This review assesses its secured and unsecured personal loans for borrowers concerned about their credit history, rather than a separately verified bad credit product.
  • Bad credit eligibility: Finance Now says applicants with a recent default to another financial institution are unlikely to be approved. Its criteria require good, proven credit experience or a guarantor with that record, alongside affordability checks.
  • Amounts and terms: NZ$1,000–$60,000 over 6–60 months, subject to approval. Larger loans usually require security. Uses include personal purchases, unexpected expenses and debt consolidation.
  • Interest and APR: Personalised fixed interest of 8.25%–29.95% p.a. until 14 January 2027. The advertised minimum becomes 8.45% p.a. for applications received afterwards. A separate fee-inclusive APR was not identified in the reviewed disclosures.
  • Fees and insurance: A $215 establishment fee and $2.50 monthly service fee apply, with other conditional charges. Payment Protection Insurance is optional; assets securing a loan must be insured under the published terms.
  • Basic requirements and application: Applicants must be at least 18 and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents living in New Zealand. Apply through Finance Now’s website with identification, income and employment information.
  • Suitability and limitation: Potentially relevant if your credit record meets its current criteria and repayments fit your budget. Recent finance defaults make it a poor fit; neither the lowest advertised rate nor the maximum amount is assured.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on Finance Now

When comparing a Finance Now offer, I would ask what a lower rate requires you to put at risk. Using your car as security may reduce interest, but if you depend on it for work, repossession could also undermine your ability to earn. That makes the consequences of a missed-payment setback part of the comparison. At LoansFinder, we encourage weighing total repayments, insurance costs and asset exposure together. Before pledging an essential asset, ask how much the secured offer actually saves over an unsecured alternative for the same amount and term.

Finance Now eligibility and credit checks

A stable income alone does not establish eligibility. Finance Now checks repayment capacity, credit history, income, address and any proposed security. Its published criteria specify no recent payment or loan defaults to other financial institutions. They do not define how recent a default must be or establish an acceptance rule for older, settled defaults.

  • Be at least 18 and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident currently living in New Zealand.
  • Provide valid identification, such as a passport or driver licence.
  • Supply after-tax income, employment and financial information sufficient to assess repayments alongside existing outgoings.
  • Provide evidence of income and address, plus security information where requested.

A guarantor may address the credit-experience requirement, but the published criteria do not say that a guarantor overrides recent defaults or an affordability shortfall. Confirm how your circumstances would be assessed before submitting a full application.

Who should consider Finance Now?

Our assessment is that Finance Now is more relevant to borrowers who can meet its credit criteria and want a choice between secured and unsecured borrowing. If an earlier credit problem has been resolved, an eligibility enquiry can establish whether a full application is worthwhile.

Reconsider borrowing if repayments would depend on further credit or leave essentials unpaid. Explore debt management support if existing commitments are already unaffordable. For applicants who qualify, compare other personal loan options using the same amount and term. A debt consolidation loan deserves consideration only after checking fees, settlement costs and the total remaining repayments on the debts being replaced.

How a Finance Now application works

Application and assessment

  1. Start through the official personal loan page and provide your requested amount, personal details and financial information.
  2. Finance Now verifies information and assesses creditworthiness and affordability. Additional documents or a conversation with its lending team may be needed.
  3. If approved, review the disclosure statement, repayment schedule, security requirements and optional products before signing.

Its privacy policy explains that it obtains credit information and shares information with credit reporting agencies and relevant service providers. This is a credit-checked application.

When could the money arrive?

Finance Now says funds can reach your account within 24 hours after approval and return of the required documents. This is a conditional funding timeframe, not a promise of approval within 24 hours of applying.

Contact, repayment support and complaints

For loan enquiries, use the contact page or call 0800 40 50 70. Borrowers experiencing repayment difficulty can contact the hardship team on 0800 654 377. Request assistance early; an application for help does not itself change your repayment obligations.

Send complaints to complaints@financenow.co.nz or use the complaints process. Finance Now identifies the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman as its free independent escalation service for unresolved loan complaints, on 0800 888 202.

Questions to ask before accepting an offer

  • Does my particular default or credit issue meet your current criteria?
  • What are my fixed rate, amount financed and total repayments, including every compulsory charge?
  • Which assets secure the loan, what insurance is required, and what obligations would a guarantor take on?
  • What would it cost to make extra payments, settle early or change the agreement?
  • If insurance is included, is it optional, which exclusions apply, and will I pay interest on its premium?

Finance Now advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • Secured and unsecured options: Applicants can discuss whether providing security offers a worthwhile reduction in their quoted cost.
  • Fixed interest: The agreed rate supports repayment planning.
  • Additional payments: Extra repayments are permitted and may reduce interest, although early settlement can carry charges.

Limitations

  • Restricted access with bad credit: Recent finance defaults conflict with the published criteria.
  • Small-loan fee burden: The establishment fee represents a larger share of a small advance.
  • Security adds exposure: An asset pledged for the loan may be repossessed following default, and keeping it insured adds to the household budget.

Finance Now interest, fees and total repayment

Your rate depends on factors including credit history, the amount borrowed and any security. The promotional minimum is not a guide to what an applicant with adverse credit will receive. Compare the total amount repayable, as the annual interest rate excludes fees.

The published fee schedule lists:

  • Establishment: $215.
  • Monthly service: $2.50.
  • Conditional charges: $7.90 PPSR fee where applicable; $95 loan variation; $3.50 third-party correspondence or statement requests; $10 administration charge for third-party costs; overpayment refunds charged at the lesser of $10 or the account balance.
  • Default charges: $5 dishonoured payment and $10 per written correspondence item. Published default interest is the higher of 28% p.a. or your annual rate plus five percentage points.

The loan booklet applies default interest to overdue amounts and allows recovery costs. Early settlement may involve an early termination fee and administration costs; request a dated settlement quotation.

Optional protection and required asset insurance

Payment Protection Insurance is optional. The published 2022 PPI policy has eligibility restrictions and benefit exclusions, including certain medical conditions from the preceding five years, known redundancy risks and redundancy within the first 30 days. Obtain the policy offered to you and check its employment requirements and benefit limits before paying for cover.

Separately, the loan terms require insurance on assets used as security, covering at least fire, accident and theft. Include that premium when assessing affordability. Insurance premiums added to the loan also incur interest.

Illustration: a lower instalment can cost more overall

Editorial calculation, not a Finance Now quotation: Assume you receive $5,000 and finance the $215 establishment fee, giving an opening balance of $5,215. At an illustrative fixed rate of 19.95% p.a., including the $2.50 monthly service fee:

  • 24 months: approximately $267.79 monthly and $6,427.06 in total repayments.
  • 60 months: approximately $140.52 monthly and $8,431.23 in total repayments.

The longer term reduces the monthly commitment but adds approximately $2,004.17 to the total paid. Calculations use equal monthly periods, an annual rate divided by 12 and payments at month-end. They exclude insurance, security-registration charges, defaults, variations and early settlement. Finance Now calculates interest daily, so an actual schedule and final payment may differ.

Verdict: check eligibility before comparing the rate

Finance Now’s strongest feature is its choice of secured and unsecured personal lending. Its main limitation for this category is the restriction on recent finance defaults. When comparing loans for borrowers with bad credit, first establish whether your record meets the lender’s criteria. If it does, judge the personalised offer by total cost, affordable repayments and any asset or guarantor exposure.

Finance Now bad credit loan FAQs

Can I get a Finance Now loan if I have defaults?

A recent default to another financial institution makes approval unlikely, according to Finance Now’s FAQs. Its published criteria do not define “recent” or explain which older, settled defaults are acceptable. Before applying, ask whether the age, amount and settlement status of your particular default meet its criteria. Paying off a default does not, by itself, establish eligibility.

Does Finance Now have a minimum credit score, and could it accept me after a bank declines?

No numerical minimum appears in its published credit criteria. Finance Now assesses repayment capacity, income, credit experience and security. A bank’s rejection does not establish what Finance Now will decide. The useful comparison is why the bank declined you: a recent finance default also conflicts with Finance Now’s criteria, whereas another lender’s product restrictions may differ.

Can I get a Finance Now quote without a credit check?

Finance Now accesses credit history when assessing applications. The reviewed pages do not establish a soft-check-only quotation process, meaning a preliminary assessment without a full application credit enquiry. Before submitting details to several lenders, ask whether requesting a personalised rate records an enquiry on your credit file and whether you can discuss basic eligibility first. A calculator result is not a personalised quotation.

Could a guarantor help if my credit history is weak?

Finance Now’s criteria allow for a guarantor with proven credit experience where the applicant does not have that record. However, they also specify no recent finance defaults and require repayment capacity. A guarantor does not establish approval or remove those requirements. Ask which eligibility issue the guarantor would address and what repayment obligations they would accept before involving someone in the application.

Would offering my car as security get me a cheaper loan?

Finance Now says security can reduce the offered rate, but its published secured and unsecured rate ranges are identical. That means the headline ranges do not demonstrate your potential saving. Ask for comparable quotations using the same amount and term. Weigh any reduction against security-related charges, required asset insurance and the risk of losing the vehicle following default.

How should I compare Finance Now’s offer with another bad credit lender?

Compare personalised total repayments for the same cash amount and repayment period. Finance Now charges a $215 establishment fee and $2.50 monthly service fee, alongside any applicable conditional charges. Check whether fees are added to the balance and attract interest. Separate optional Payment Protection Insurance from compulsory costs. A smaller instalment achieved by extending the term does not establish a cheaper offer, and the advertised starting rate is not a rate specifically available to borrowers with bad credit.

Can I apply with self-employed income and a poor credit history?

Self-employed applicants can apply, but Finance Now’s document guidance differs between pages. Its interest-rate guidance specifies one full financial year of self-employment and the latest IRD acknowledgement; its general FAQs refer more broadly to evidence of business income. Confirm the current requirements, particularly if you have traded for less than a year. Meeting income requirements does not override its credit criteria.

Could early repayment charges outweigh the benefit of switching lenders later?

They could, depending on the settlement charge and the replacement loan’s costs. Finance Now permits extra payments but says early settlement may trigger charges. If you expect to refinance after improving your credit record, ask how settlement would be calculated. Compare the full cost of switching—including settlement charges, new establishment fees and replacement repayments—with the payments remaining on your existing loan.

What should I establish before applying elsewhere after a decline?

Finance Now says it can explain the reasons for declining and what may improve future eligibility. Ask whether the decisive issue was credit history, verified income, existing commitments or security. If incorrect information influenced the decision, ask how to submit corrections. When approaching another provider, check its treatment of that specific issue first; a different advertised rate does not tell you whether its acceptance criteria differ.
