BNZ Business First term loan: summary
- Provider and purpose: Bank of New Zealand is a registered bank and direct lender. Its Business First term loan can fund business investment, expansion or an agreed funding requirement.
- Amounts and terms: QuickBiz offers NZ$5,000–NZ$100,000, subject to approval, with fixed rates and repayment terms of 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. Larger borrowing requires a separate discussion with BNZ.
- Interest and APR: BNZ confirms your rate after application. A current universal interest rate or fee-inclusive APR was not verified in the reviewed sources.
- Fees and insurance: Establishment fees apply; rate-lock and early repayment charges may also apply. Confirm all amounts in your quotation. Insurance obligations depend on the lending and security documents.
- Security: Eligible QuickBiz borrowing may be available without additional security. Check whether existing security or personal guarantees cover the loan.
- Eligibility and application: Apply online as an eligible sole trader, partner or company director. QuickBiz requires applicants to be at least 18, permanently resident in New Zealand and able to provide 12 months of reconciled business financial data, subject to BNZ’s documented exceptions.
- Best fit and main limitation: Most relevant to an established business seeking scheduled repayments for a defined investment. Personalised pricing and potential early repayment costs limit comparison until you have a written offer.
Alexander Balanoff on BNZ
When comparing a BNZ business loan, look beyond whether the business is profitable and check when the cash actually arrives. An unpaid invoice cannot fund this month’s repayment, and new equipment may take time to earn its keep. Test the proposed repayments against a quieter month or a delayed customer payment, including whether you would need to contribute personal savings. At LoansFinder, we encourage borrowers to compare total borrowing costs and repayment timing together. A useful loan should support the business while leaving enough cash for tax, wages and everyday expenses.
BNZ business loan eligibility and documents
For QuickBiz, you must be a sole trader, partner in a partnership or company director, aged 18 or over and a permanent New Zealand resident. Meeting these entry conditions does not establish approval or affordability.
BNZ’s supporting-documentation requirements include:
- Income statement and balance sheet: From your latest full financial year, received within nine months of that year ending.
- Transaction history: Twelve months of reconciled business trading-account transactions and business credit-card transactions where applicable. The latest transaction must be within 31 days of application.
- Existing-customer exception: Supporting documents may not be necessary for existing BNZ customers with total lending of $50,000 or less.
BNZ’s privacy policy describes identity and credit-history checks, including assessing whether security or a guarantor is needed. Prepare a cash-flow forecast showing repayments alongside wages, tax, suppliers and existing debt; historical profit alone does not show when cash will be available.
Who the BNZ Business First term loan suits
Our assessment is that this loan best suits a defined investment with a credible repayment source, such as expanding capacity or purchasing equipment. Match the repayment period to when the investment should generate usable cash.
A recurring gap between paying suppliers and collecting invoices may warrant comparing an overdraft. For a vehicle or machinery purchase, compare asset finance alongside other business loan options. Businesses borrowing to cover continuing losses should first establish how those losses will stop.
How to apply for a BNZ business loan
Application and assessment
Use BNZ’s Business First term-loan application and upload the requested financial reports as PDFs, within the stated 5MB limit. BNZ then assesses the application and confirms the proposed terms. Check the approved amount, repayment schedule, fees and security obligations before accepting.
For larger borrowing or help choosing a facility, request a lending discussion or call BNZ’s Small Business Specialists on 0800 269 763.
Decision and funding times
BNZ says it will contact QuickBiz applicants within two business days with a decision or to discuss next steps. This is not a commitment to release funds within that period. Allow for further assessment and completion of any lending conditions.
Questions to ask before accepting BNZ’s offer
- What will I receive after upfront deductions, and what is the total scheduled repayment including fees?
- Does the fixed-rate period cover the full repayment term, and is any balance due as a final lump sum?
- Does existing business or residential-property security cover this loan, and what personal liability would a guarantee create?
- What would extra repayments or full settlement cost, and which insurance policies or financial-reporting obligations are required?
BNZ business loan advantages and limitations
Advantages: QuickBiz combines online applications with weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayments. Eligible borrowing may avoid additional security, and a BNZ transaction account is not required for the Business First term loan.
Limitations: The financial-history requirements can restrict access for new businesses. The online route has a $100,000 ceiling, pricing requires assessment, and fixed-rate borrowing may incur charges if repaid early.
BNZ business loan interest, fees and total cost
BNZ’s pricing information explains that business term-loan interest can comprise a base rate plus a margin or a fixed rate. A base rate alone is not the borrower’s complete rate. QuickBiz uses fixed-rate options; the separate 90-day option is unavailable through that channel. Interest is calculated daily on the outstanding balance, and overdue amounts attract the default rate specified in the agreement.
Fees: Obtain the establishment fee and any rate-lock charge in writing; a standard QuickBiz establishment-fee amount was not verified. Where relevant security is released, BNZ’s October 2026 fee guide lists $40 for a mortgage discharge or partial discharge and $100 for discharge or partial discharge of a debenture, general security agreement or specific security agreement. These are conditional charges, not costs imposed on every QuickBiz borrower.
Insurance: No universal compulsory repayment-insurance premium was identified. However, the master terms require security providers to maintain specified business and property insurance. Confirm which obligations apply, the premiums, excesses and exclusions. Insurance should not be assumed to cover ordinary trading losses or every missed repayment.
Illustration: lower repayments versus total interest
This original illustration assumes a $20,000 loan at a hypothetical 10% annual interest rate, unchanged throughout, with monthly amortisation and no fees, insurance or default or early repayment costs. It is not a BNZ quotation; BNZ’s daily interest calculation may produce different figures.
- 24 months: Approximately $922.90 monthly; total repayments $22,149.56, including $2,149.56 interest.
- 36 months: Approximately $645.34 monthly; total repayments $23,232.37, including $3,232.37 interest.
The longer term reduces the monthly commitment but adds about $1,083 in interest. Use BNZ’s actual repayment schedule and add any separately payable fees and required insurance when assessing affordability.
Is a BNZ business loan worth considering?
BNZ is worth comparing for established businesses seeking predictable repayments for a specific investment. Its strongest feature is the choice of repayment arrangements; its main limitation is that value depends on a personalised offer. Compare the total cost and security exposure over the same repayment period, then check whether the business can meet payments during its quieter months.
BNZ business loan FAQs
Can I borrow more than $100,000 from BNZ?
Potentially. The $100,000 limit applies to QuickBiz term loans. BNZ directs larger requests to its business lending team for individual assessment; the reviewed term-loan page does not specify a universal maximum for separately arranged lending.
What interest rate will BNZ charge?
BNZ confirms the rate after assessing your application. Request the complete annual rate, fees and repayment schedule. The earlier 6.43% starting-rate claim could not be verified as a current offer for this product.
Can a new business apply through QuickBiz?
QuickBiz ordinarily requires 12 months of reconciled financial data, making it unsuitable for many newly launched businesses. Discuss other lending options with BNZ if you cannot meet that requirement.
Do I need to bank with BNZ already?
No. BNZ says an existing business account is not required to apply. A BNZ transaction account is also not required for the Business First term loan.
Is a QuickBiz business loan unsecured?
BNZ describes eligible borrowing as available without additional security. That wording does not establish that existing security is excluded or that no personal guarantee is required. Ask BNZ to identify the obligations applying to your offer.
Can I repay a BNZ business loan early?
Yes, but costs may apply. The master terms ordinarily require two business days’ written notice. You can request an early repayment cost calculation without charge before deciding.
What if my business cannot afford the repayments?
Contact BNZ early. Its business repayment support may include extending the term, reducing repayments or temporarily moving to interest-only payments, assessed case by case. Ask how any change affects total interest and the remaining balance.
How do I complain about a BNZ business loan?
Use BNZ’s complaints process or call 0800 275 269. Unresolved matters can be escalated to its Customer Resolution Team on 0800 788 999. If you remain dissatisfied, contact the independent Banking Ombudsman Scheme on 0800 805 950 to check whether it can consider your complaint.
