Review basis: Researched on 6 October 2026 using First Credit Union’s official personal loan page, rates and fees, application guidance, FAQs, agreement and general terms, insurance information and privacy policy. Pricing pages did not identify an effective date. Conflicting term, rate and fee disclosures are explained below. The linked insurance policy documents could not be retrieved, so their exclusions were not verified. This is an editorial assessment of public information, not first-hand borrowing experience or a personalised quotation. All amounts are NZ dollars.

First Credit Union personal loan review

  • Provider and purpose: First Credit Union Incorporated is a New Zealand member-owned direct lender. Personal loans can fund purchases, travel and debt consolidation.
  • Amounts and terms: The online form accepts requests of $500–$100,000, subject to assessment. The product page specifies 3 months–5 years, while the form displays 6–84 months. Confirm the available amount and term directly.
  • Interest and APR: Advertised rates are 10.95%–18.00% p.a., described as variable. Other wording suggests unchanged rates, creating a material inconsistency. No separate fee-inclusive APR was identified in the reviewed disclosures.
  • Fees: FCU advertises no application fee or early repayment penalties. Third-party charges of up to $29.90 per applicant may apply, although published fee figures differ. Charges added to the loan attract interest; default and recovery costs can also apply.
  • Eligibility: Published criteria specify New Zealand citizens over 18, subject to lending assessment. Existing membership is not required to apply; successful borrowers become members.
  • Security and insurance: Confirm whether assets must secure your offer. Provident CreditCare repayment insurance is optional; insurance required on pledged assets is a separate obligation.
  • Application: Apply online, by phone or in a branch. FCU says its lending team will contact applicants within 1–3 working days; this is not a funding deadline.
  • Assessment: Worth comparing for its low upfront charges and advertised repayment flexibility. Its main limitation is inconsistent public information that needs resolving in the written offer.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on First Credit Union

One detail I would check with First Credit Union is whether the offer includes a Loan Provider savings account. FCU says money in that account stays frozen during the loan, so ask whether any savings contribution comes on top of the quoted repayment. Those savings remain yours, but they are not readily available for unexpected expenses. At LoansFinder, we encourage readers to compare the full monthly commitment alongside the total borrowing cost. Setting money aside has value, but an affordable loan should also leave room to handle an ordinary setback without borrowing again.

First Credit Union eligibility and documents

FCU’s personal loan FAQs specify New Zealand citizenship and an age over 18. They do not establish eligibility for non-citizens; confirm your position before applying. Approval depends on your financial circumstances, with identity, credit and financial-information checks.

Prepare photo ID, proof of your current residential address if joining, details of any assets offered as security and loans you guarantee. FCU requests 90 days of bank statements through Credit Sense unless your wages already go into an FCU account. These records help assess income, spending and repayment capacity. The reviewed personal loan guidance does not specify a minimum income or credit-score threshold.

Who should consider an FCU personal loan?

FCU merits consideration if you want to limit setup costs or expect to make extra repayments. A small upfront fee advantage can matter on a modest loan, but your approved interest rate and repayment period usually drive the larger cost difference.

Compare other personal loan options if your quote approaches the upper rate, you need confirmed fixed repayments or you do not want to pledge assets. For debt consolidation, compare the total remaining cost of your existing debts with the new offer over a similar payoff period. Extending repayment can reduce the instalment while increasing total interest.

How the FCU application works

Application and assessment

Use FCU’s official application form, visit a branch or apply by phone. Select your requested amount, term and weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayment frequency. Calculator results indicate repayments; they do not establish approval or your final terms.

After submission, FCU sends an application-status link and reviews your information. If approved, it contacts you to arrange signing and identification checks. Read the personalised loan schedule alongside the general terms, including security and insurance conditions, before accepting.

Application time versus funding time

The application guide estimates 6–10 minutes to complete the online form and contact from the lending team within 1–3 working days. Approval, signing and release of funds are separate stages. The reviewed guidance does not support a promise of approval in 15 minutes or payment within 24 hours.

Questions to resolve before signing

  • Is my rate fixed or variable, and what can change my repayment amount?
  • Which term applies to my offer, given the different ranges on the product page and application form?
  • What amount will I receive, what charges will be financed, and what is the total scheduled repayment?
  • What assets secure the loan, what insurance is required, and does the security cover other borrowing with FCU?
  • Does my agreement confirm penalty-free extra payments and early settlement, despite the generic template’s fixed-rate break-cost clause?
  • Will I need a Loan Provider savings account, what contributions apply, and when can I access that money?

FCU personal loan advantages and limitations

  • Low setup charges: No application fee is advertised, reducing one cost that can weigh heavily on smaller loans.
  • Repayment flexibility: FCU advertises extra payments and early settlement without penalties, useful when your budget allows faster repayment.
  • Choice of application channel: Phone and branch applications offer alternatives to the online process.
  • Disclosure inconsistencies: Term limits, rate behaviour and third-party fee figures are not consistent across the official sources.
  • Conditional costs and restrictions: Security, insurance and financed charges can change the comparison. If you have a Loan Provider account, FCU says its savings remain frozen during the loan.

First Credit Union interest, fees and total cost

Interest and conflicting rate wording

FCU advertises 10.95%–18.00% p.a., with the rate depending on the amount, circumstances and credit history. Its rates page calls these floating rates but also says the rate and repayment remain unchanged for the loan’s life. The general terms allow floating-rate changes. Obtain written clarification rather than budgeting on an assumed fixed rate.

Upfront and default charges

The product page quotes third-party fees of up to $29.90 per applicant. However, the itemised schedule totals $29.60 if all six listed services apply, while the FAQs quote $26.62. These figures could not be reconciled. Ask for the applicable itemised charges; amounts financed accrue interest.

The schedule includes a $10 dishonoured instalment-debit fee, $10 arrears letter and $20 notice of arrears. Further enforcement charges and external recovery costs may apply. The sample loan schedule specifies a default rate three percentage points above the rate applying at default. Check its application in your own agreement.

Optional cover and secured-asset insurance

Provident CreditCare insurance is optional. Its premium can be paid upfront or added to the loan; financing it increases the interest-bearing balance. Obtain the current policy and check eligibility, exclusions, waiting periods and benefit limits before deciding, as these details could not be verified here.

Separately, the general terms require insurance acceptable to FCU over secured property. Include any required premium in your affordability comparison. Default can expose pledged assets to enforcement.

FCU’s published secured-loan example

FCU’s official example is a secured car loan: $10,000 borrowed, no application fee and a $29.90 third-party fee, giving $10,029.90 financed. Over four years at 10.95% p.a. variable, it quotes weekly repayments of $59.73, total interest of $2,393.94 and total repayment of $12,423.84.

The published total equals 208 payments of $59.73. It is indicative, excludes loan protection insurance and does not establish an unsecured personal-loan price. A different approved rate, rate changes, insurance or payment timing can alter your cost.

Verdict: compare the written offer

FCU’s strongest feature is its advertised combination of no application fee and penalty-free early repayment. Its main limitation is uncertainty created by conflicting disclosures. Compare its written offer with another lender for the same amount and repayment period, including security requirements, insurance and total repayment. That comparison is more useful than choosing by the starting rate alone.

First Credit Union personal loan FAQs

Can I borrow more than $10,000, and repay over seven years?

FCU’s online form accepts requests of $500–$100,000 and displays terms of 6–84 months. However, its personal loan page specifies 3 months–5 years. These disclosures conflict, so the form does not establish that a seven-year term or $100,000 loan is available to you. Obtain confirmation of the approved amount and term before comparing repayments with another provider.

Does having no application fee make FCU cheaper than a bank?

Not necessarily. FCU advertises rates of 10.95%–18.00% p.a., so your approved rate can outweigh the application-fee saving. Third-party charges may also apply and attract interest when financed. Published fee figures differ; request an itemised quote and compare total repayment for the same amount and term against other personal loans. Also ask about employer or partner-group schemes: FCU offers eligible applicants unpublished special rates through validated promo codes.

Will my interest rate and repayments stay the same?

FCU’s public wording is inconsistent. Its rates page describes floating rates but also says the rate and repayment remain unchanged throughout the loan. Its general terms permit floating-rate changes. Ask FCU to identify the rate type, circumstances allowing changes and effect on repayments in your written offer. This matters when comparing FCU with a loan whose rate is explicitly fixed for the full term.

Must I join FCU or build savings before borrowing?

You do not need existing membership to apply; taking out a loan makes you a member. Separately, FCU says funds in a Loan Provider account remain frozen during the loan. The reviewed guidance does not establish that every borrower must have this account. Ask whether it applies to your offer and whether contributions are additional to the quoted repayment. Those contributions remain savings, but restricted access affects your available budget.

Can I make extra payments or settle early without losing the cost advantage?

FCU advertises no penalties for extra repayments or early settlement. However, its generic agreement template includes a break-cost clause for fixed-rate borrowing. Have FCU confirm which wording applies to your personal loan. If you expect to settle early, compare the projected settlement balance plus payments and upfront charges already paid across lenders; a full-term repayment total does not measure that scenario accurately.

Could security or insurance make an FCU offer more expensive than it looks?

Yes. Confirm whether your offer requires security and which assets would be exposed if you default. FCU’s general terms require acceptable insurance over secured property. This is separate from Provident CreditCare repayment insurance, which is optional. Its premium can be paid upfront or financed, increasing the interest-bearing balance. Compare quotations with equivalent insurance choices, and obtain the policy’s exclusions, waiting periods and benefit limits before adding cover.

When would consolidating debts with FCU improve my position?

FCU lends for debt consolidation, but the useful comparison is the remaining cost and repayment date of your existing debts against the new loan. Request a quotation without additional cash borrowing so the comparison stays clear. Include existing lenders’ settlement charges and any FCU insurance or fees. If previously unsecured debts would become secured against a vehicle or property, factor that additional risk into your debt consolidation comparison.

What support is available if repayments become unaffordable, and could it affect my credit file?

Call 07 834 4810 and ask for the Collection Solutions team to discuss payment arrangements or a hardship application. Supporting documents can be sent to hardship@firstcu.co.nz. FCU states that approved hardship is reported to credit bureaux with an “H” status while it applies. Ask how your proposed arrangement will be reported and whether interest continues accruing. Independent debt management support can help assess the options.

Who can resolve a disagreement about my rate, fees or loan conditions?

Raise the issue with FCU on 07 834 4810, through its contact page or at 111 Collingwood Street, Hamilton. Include your quotation, agreement and the disputed charge or wording. Call-centre hours are Monday 10am–5pm and Tuesday–Friday 8am–5pm, New Zealand time. Unresolved complaints can be referred to Financial Services Complaints Limited, its independent, free dispute-resolution service, on 0800 347 257.
