Loan Direct
Compare Loan Direct personal loans in NZ: up to $75,000 unsecured over 6–84 months. Check rates, broker fees and eligibility. Subject to approval.
Review basis: Researched on 6 October 2026 using Loan Direct’s official personal loan page, unsecured loan page, fee schedule, disclosure statement, FAQs and sources linked below. No pricing effective date was displayed. Published unsecured starting rates conflict; lender-specific agreements and the current FSPR entry were not independently verified. This is a document-based editorial assessment, not first-hand borrowing experience or a compliance audit. All amounts are NZ dollars.
Loan Direct personal loans: summary
- Provider: Loan Direct is a trading name of Loansmart Limited and operates as a personal loan broker, arranging finance from a panel of providers.
- Amounts and terms: Advertised limits are up to $75,000 unsecured or $150,000 secured, with terms of 6–84 months, subject to lender approval. Uses include household expenses, vehicles and debt consolidation.
- Interest and APR: The published overall annual interest range is 9.95%–32.50%. Official pages disagree on whether unsecured rates start at 9.95% or 11.95%. The published 19.33% APR applies to the advertised example, not every offer.
- Fees: Applying is free. On entering an arranged loan, the service fee is up to 5% of the loan amount plus $245, capped at $995 unsecured or $1,995 secured, excluding GST. Lender charges are additional.
- Insurance and security: Loan protection insurance is optional. Insurance over property offered as security is required; confirm other asset-insurance conditions. Secured borrowing puts the pledged asset at risk.
- Eligibility and application: Applicants must live in New Zealand and satisfy income, affordability and lender checks. Apply online; photo ID and 90 days of bank statements are requested.
- Best fit and main limitation: Useful for borrowers wanting help comparing panel lenders. The extra broker fee and inconsistent advertised pricing make the complete written quotation more important than the headline rate.
Alexander Balanoff on Loan Direct
With a broker such as Loan Direct, I would compare costs over the time you actually expect to keep the loan. A lower interest rate may look attractive over five years, but if you repay after twelve months, the savings may not offset the arrangement fee. Ask for the total cost of repaying at your intended date, including upfront fees and any settlement charges, then compare a direct lender’s offer for the same cash amount. At LoansFinder, we encourage that closer comparison: value depends on how you will use and repay the loan.
Loan Direct eligibility and required documents
The application form requires New Zealand residence and asks about citizenship or visa status, weekly income, and expected changes to income and expenses. Non-citizens can enter residency and visa details, but the form does not establish which visa categories each lender accepts.
Prepare valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, and the last 90 days of bank statements. These support identity and affordability checks. Additional documents depend on the proposed lender, security and loan purpose. The checked personal loan pages do not clearly establish a universal minimum age, income threshold or minimum borrowing amount; confirm these before applying.
Past defaults do not automatically exclude an application. Loan Direct says current repayments and recent bank-account conduct matter, and security may be requested. Approval and the advertised minimum rate remain conditional.
Who should consider Loan Direct?
Loan Direct may suit someone who wants a consultant to assess options from several panel lenders, particularly where their circumstances need explanation. Its service has value only if the resulting loan justifies the additional arrangement cost.
Borrowers with straightforward finances should also compare personal loans available directly from lenders. Match the cash received and repayment term: a broker-arranged offer with a lower interest rate can still cost more after fees.
For debt consolidation, compare the new total repayment with the remaining cost of existing debts. Extending repayment can lower the instalment while increasing overall cost. If borrowing would cover an ongoing budget shortfall, consider debt management support before adding another commitment.
How the Loan Direct application works
Application and assessment
Submit the official online application. Under the published application process, a consultant discusses your needs, collects supporting information and assesses available options. The proposed lender decides whether to approve the loan. Review the lender’s identity, disclosure and repayment schedule before signing electronically and satisfying any remaining conditions.
Loan Direct’s privacy policy allows information sharing with lenders, insurers and other service providers. Ask which organisations will receive your application and whether submissions involve separate credit enquiries.
Approval and payment times
Loan Direct advertises decisions within 1–2 hours and possible same-day funding, subject to complete information, lending checks and approval conditions. These are conditional service claims, not a payment deadline. Its FAQs say documents returned after 3:30 pm may result in payment the following day, depending on the lender and bank.
Contact, repayment support and complaints
Contact Loan Direct on 0800 255 155 or loans@loandirect.co.nz. Published hours are Monday–Friday, 8 am–5 pm. Its address is Level 18, 55 Shortland Street, Auckland 1010.
If repayments become difficult, contact the lender named in your agreement promptly about hardship options; the broker can help identify the relevant contact. Loan Direct’s disclosure directs unresolved complaints about its service to Financial Services Complaints Limited, on 0800 347 257. A complaint about the lender may follow a different dispute-resolution route.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
- Which lender is providing the money, which alternatives were considered, and what commission or referral payment will Loan Direct receive?
- What are my personalised interest rate, total fees including any GST, net cash received and total amount repayable?
- Are fees or insurance premiums financed, and how much interest will that add?
- What security and asset insurance are required, and what happens if I miss repayments?
- What charges apply to extra payments, early settlement, arrears or cancellation after payout?
Loan Direct advantages and limitations
- Advantages: Access to several panel lenders through one consultant; secured and unsecured options; online document collection and signing.
- Limitations: The panel does not represent the whole market. Broker charges add to lender costs, secured loans carry asset risk, and official pages give inconsistent unsecured starting rates.
The disclosure also states that Loan Direct may receive lender, insurance and referral commissions. Ask why the recommended offer is suitable and how its total cost compares with the alternatives considered.
Loan Direct interest, fees and total borrowing cost
Published interest rates need confirmation
The website publishes an overall annual interest range of 9.95%–32.50%. However, the personal loan page advertises secured rates from 9.95% and unsecured rates from 11.95%, while the unsecured page advertises 9.95%. No clear effective dates resolve this discrepancy. Obtain a personalised written rate instead of assuming either unsecured minimum applies.
Broker and lender charges
The fee schedule sets the service fee at up to 5% of the loan amount plus $245, capped at $995 unsecured or $1,995 secured, excluding GST. The fee is disclosed before acceptance and can be paid separately or financed. Financing increases the balance on which interest is charged.
The unsecured calculator also lists a lender establishment fee of up to $215. Confirm the selected lender’s complete charges, including ongoing, default and early-settlement costs; the broker’s schedule does not establish a universal tariff for these.
Optional cover and conditional insurance
CreditCare loan protection is optional and separately priced. Published exclusions include specified pre-existing conditions and arrears arising before an insured event; stand-down periods and claim limits apply. Check the actual policy wording and whether financed premiums attract interest.
Optional repayment cover is separate from insurance required over security. Loan Direct’s FAQs require proof of insurance when property secures the loan. Confirm the conditions for any other pledged asset.
Loan Direct’s published repayment example
The official example shows $10,000 over 60 months at 14.95% annual interest, with a $215 lender establishment fee and $745 Loansmart fee. It quotes $59.91 weekly, $15,576.98 total repayment and 19.33% APR.
These are advertised figures, not a personalised offer. As an arithmetic check, 260 payments of $59.91 total $15,576.60, which is $0.38 below the stated total. The example does not explain that difference or clearly reconcile GST treatment with the fee schedule. Request the actual instalment schedule and tax-inclusive charges; no insurance premium is identified in the example.
Is Loan Direct worth considering?
Loan Direct’s strongest feature is consultant-assisted access to several lenders. Its main limitation is the additional arrangement cost, compounded by inconsistent headline pricing. Compare the broker’s complete offer with a direct-lender quotation for the same cash amount and term. A lower instalment alone does not demonstrate better value.
Loan Direct personal loan FAQs
Is Loan Direct a lender, and does it compare the whole market?
Loan Direct operates as a personal loan broker under Loansmart Limited. Its disclosure statement lists a panel of lenders and separate referral partners, so its recommendations do not cover the entire market. It may receive commissions as well as charging a service fee. Ask which lenders were considered and why the recommended offer was selected.
Could applying directly to a lender cost less than using Loan Direct?
It could, but compare actual quotations. Loan Direct adds a service fee to the lender’s charges, so a lower interest rate may not produce a cheaper loan. Compare personal loan offers using the same cash received and repayment term, including fees paid separately. If you expect to repay early, compare the cost to that date: spreading an upfront broker fee over fewer months makes it more significant.
Does Loan Direct’s 9.95% advertised rate apply to unsecured loans?
Its official pages conflict. The personal loan page advertises rates from 9.95% secured and 11.95% unsecured, while its unsecured loan page advertises 9.95%. Neither minimum should be treated as your likely offer. Request written confirmation of the applicable rate, lender and security requirements. An advertised interest rate also excludes costs captured by a fee-inclusive comparison.
Can I borrow without security, and is offering an asset worth considering?
Loan Direct advertises up to $75,000 unsecured and $150,000 secured, subject to approval. Offering security may change the available amount or rate, but the broker’s published fee cap is also higher for secured borrowing. Ask for both options where available, including any required asset insurance. Compare the total saving against the risk of losing the pledged asset if repayments are not met.
Can Loan Direct help after a decline or past credit defaults?
A past default does not automatically rule out consideration. Loan Direct’s FAQs emphasise the circumstances behind defaults, whether current credit commitments are up to date, and recent bank-account conduct. Security may be required. A broker may identify a lender with different criteria, but cannot override that lender’s affordability assessment. Explain the reason for any recent decline before requesting further applications.
When does Loan Direct charge its fee, and what if I cancel?
Applying is free. The service fee applies when you enter an arranged loan: up to 5% of the loan amount plus $245, capped at $995 unsecured or $1,995 secured, excluding GST. Loan Direct states that cancellation before funds are advanced attracts no fee, but its service fee is non-refundable after payout. Confirm the final fee, GST treatment and cancellation terms before accepting.
Does one Loan Direct application mean only one credit check?
The published process does not establish that only one credit enquiry will occur. Loan Direct prepares an application and submits it to lenders for approval. Before proceeding, ask which lenders will receive it, whether each will record an enquiry on your credit file, and whether an indicative quotation is available before a formal application. One application form should not be interpreted as a promise of one credit check.
How should I compare offers if I plan to repay early?
Request each proposed lender’s rules for extra payments, lump sums and full settlement, plus an illustrative settlement balance at your expected repayment date. Loan Direct’s broker fee schedule does not establish one early-repayment policy across its panel. Include upfront fees and interest on financed fees in the comparison: a longer-term interest saving may not offset the arrangement cost if you clear the loan quickly.
Will Loan Direct pay off my existing debts, and how do I check the saving?
Loan Direct says existing creditors can be paid directly using settlement letters; some lenders require this. For debt consolidation, compare the remaining repayments on your existing debts with the new loan’s total cost, including settlement charges and broker fees. Request a quotation without extra cash first, so additional borrowing does not obscure the refinancing comparison. A lower instalment achieved through a longer term can still increase total repayment.
