Review basis: Researched on 6 October 2026 using Admiral Finance’s official personal loan page, pricing schedule, FAQs, application form, application and privacy terms, agreement templates, repayment support information and complaints procedure. The pricing schedule is marked “Last updated: 24 July 2025”; conflicting information elsewhere on the website is identified below. The agreement templates include older documents, so current contractual terms require confirmation. No personalised quotation was obtained. Suitability and value judgements are editorial assessments.
Admiral Finance personal loans: summary
- Provider and purpose: Admiral Finance operates within the Crester Credit group and offers personal lending for expenses, purchases and debt consolidation. Its application terms name Crester Credit Co Limited.
- Amounts and terms: Advertised borrowing is NZ$1,000–NZ$50,000, although the application form accepts requests from NZ$800. FAQs describe terms up to four years against assets such as vehicles, or five years against property or land. Confirm the available minimum amount and term.
- Interest and APR: The dated secured-loan schedule lists 9.95%–26.9% p.a., subject to assessment. A separate fee-inclusive APR was not found in the sources checked.
- Fees: Establishment fees across the advertised range are NZ$135–NZ$795. Monthly administration is listed at NZ$10, plus NZ$5 per additional borrower. Security-related and other conditional charges can apply.
- Security and insurance: Expect to provide acceptable assets as security, personally or through a supporting borrower. The published agreement template requires collateral insurance; payment protection is optional. Confirm current requirements and premiums.
- Eligibility and application: Applicants must meet residence, age, credit and affordability criteria. Apply directly online, by telephone or at the Christchurch office. Published income thresholds conflict.
- Best fit and main limitation: Potentially useful for borrowers seeking individual assessment who can provide security. Fees and the possibility of losing pledged assets make the total cost and security conditions decisive.
Alexander Balanoff on Admiral Finance
When considering an Admiral Finance offer, I would ask whether any saving over an unsecured alternative justifies putting an essential asset at risk. A car used for work has value beyond its sale price: losing it could also disrupt your income. Compare quotes for the same amount and repayment term, including fees and required insurance. At BestLoans, we encourage borrowers to weigh both the total repayment and the security involved. The more you depend on an asset, the more carefully you should assess the benefit of pledging it.
Admiral Finance eligibility and documents
The published criteria require applicants to be at least 18, live in New Zealand and be a New Zealand citizen or hold a Permanent Resident Visa. Applicants aged 18–21 need a guarantor. Current bankruptcy or a No Asset Procedure can exclude an applicant.
The minimum income is unclear: the homepage states NZ$450 a week, while the FAQs mention NZ$400. Confirm the applicable threshold before applying; meeting it does not establish affordability.
Prepare photo identification, any requested secondary ID, address and employment details, income and expenditure information, bank statements and details of the proposed security. The application asks about vehicle ownership, existing finance and insurance. Admiral assesses affordability and creditworthiness; the asset offered does not replace those checks. Its FAQs also require at least a restricted driving licence when buying a vehicle or using one as security.
Who should consider this personal loan?
Admiral may suit someone with a defined expense, enough income after essentials and an acceptable asset to secure the borrowing. Its individual assessment may be relevant where a standard application does not fully explain the borrower’s circumstances.
Compare other personal loan options if an unsecured offer could meet the same need without pledging an essential vehicle or property. For debt consolidation, compare the remaining cost of existing debts with the complete replacement loan: a lower instalment can result from extending repayment rather than saving money. Persistent budget shortfalls warrant debt management support before further borrowing.
How an Admiral Finance application works
Application and assessment
Use Admiral’s direct application form, call 0800 200 261, or visit 3 Shirley Road, Mairehau, Christchurch. Its contact page lists business hours as Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.
The lender reviews your finances and security before presenting an offer. Check the initial disclosure, repayment schedule and asset descriptions before signing. Most loans can be signed electronically.
The application consent permits credit and fraud checks and information sharing with credit reporting agencies and other specified recipients. It also covers marketing and ongoing credit monitoring. Read these permissions before submitting personal information.
Approval and payment timing
Admiral advertises decisions within 60 minutes during business hours, subject to sufficient information and lending checks. Its product page describes funding within 24 hours after approval and signing; FAQs say the next business day and mention a chargeable same-day service. Confirm the payment date and any urgency fee before relying on the funds.
Questions to resolve before signing
- What cash amount will I receive, what opening balance will I owe, and what is the total repayable?
- Which rate and fee schedule applies, and can the rate or charges change?
- Exactly which assets secure the loan, and what obligations does a supporting borrower or guarantor accept?
- What insurance is required, what cover is optional, and are premiums financed?
- What would an early settlement cost, including compensation and releasing the security?
- Which legal entity is lending, and which external dispute resolution scheme covers this agreement?
Admiral Finance advantages and limitations
Advantages: Online and telephone applications, electronic signing for most loans, and individual assessment provide practical access. Repayments can be scheduled weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
Limitations: Security exposes pledged assets to recovery if repayment fails. Fixed fees weigh particularly heavily on smaller loans. Conflicting website disclosures also make a written, itemised quotation essential to a reliable comparison.
Interest, fees and the full borrowing cost
The 24 July 2025 schedule calculates interest daily and posts it monthly. Establishment charges depend on amount and complexity. It also lists NZ$10 automatic or NZ$20 manual security registration, NZ$14.45 vehicle searches, NZ$65 early settlement plus possible prepayment compensation, and NZ$2 daily arrears management alongside contact and recovery charges.
Pricing discrepancies: The undated responsible lending page gives a lower secured-rate ceiling of 23.95% and different fees. FAQs say new loans from July 2017 have no settlement fee. Obtain written confirmation of the charges applicable to your agreement.
Illustration: fees on a small loan
For NZ$1,000 over 12 months, a NZ$135 establishment fee plus twelve NZ$10 administration charges totals NZ$255 before interest. This assumes one borrower and excludes security costs, insurance, default and early settlement. It is a fee illustration, not a repayment quotation.
Insurance and security costs
The calculator disclosure excludes optional payment protection and flags possible collateral inspection and property registration costs. Request an itemised total including any legal expenses.
The 2021 agreement template requires pledged assets to remain insured. Its optional Payment Protection Plan is described as a payment waiver, not an insurance contract. Exclusions include pre-existing conditions; redundancy cover excludes self-employed people and seasonal or fixed-term work ending. Obtain current wording, eligibility rules, waiting periods and premiums before choosing cover.
The same template says repossessed assets may be sold and any remaining shortfall can still be owed. Assess that exposure alongside the monthly repayment.
Verdict: compare the complete secured offer
Admiral’s strongest feature is access to individual assessment with several application channels. Its main limitation is the combination of asset security, additional costs and inconsistent public disclosures. Our assessment is that an offer merits consideration only when its full repayment cost compares favourably with alternatives and the security obligations are acceptable. The advertised starting rate alone is insufficient to establish value.
Admiral Finance personal loan FAQs
How does Admiral’s total cost compare with its advertised interest rate?
The interest rate excludes several charges that can materially affect smaller loans. Using Admiral’s published fee schedule, NZ$1,000 over 12 months would attract NZ$135 establishment plus NZ$120 administration for one borrower: NZ$255 before interest, security costs or insurance. This is a fee illustration, not a repayment quotation. Compare personal loan offers using the same cash amount received and repayment period, with all compulsory costs included.
Is Admiral more suitable than a bank if my credit history is imperfect?
Admiral considers applicants without a perfect credit record, but its FAQs also require reasonable credit history. Its individual assessment does not establish that approval is more likely or borrowing cheaper than through a bank. Compare the actual offer, including security requirements: access to a loan can come with a higher rate, additional fees and assets at risk.
Can benefit income qualify, and what minimum income does Admiral require?
The application form explicitly includes beneficiaries, so employment is not the only income route considered. However, the homepage states a NZ$450 weekly minimum while the FAQs mention NZ$400. Confirm the applicable threshold and which income payments count before applying. Meeting an income threshold does not replace checks on expenses, existing debts and repayment capacity.
Can someone else provide security, and how does that compare with an unsecured loan?
Admiral’s application allows a supporting borrower to provide security when you have no suitable assets. This transfers some of the financial exposure to another person rather than removing it. Ask whether they would sign as a co-borrower or guarantor, how much they could owe and exactly which assets would be pledged. Compare an unsecured alternative after including Admiral’s security-related fees and any required insurance.
Can I choose a five-year term without securing the loan against property?
Admiral’s FAQs describe repayment periods up to four years against assets such as vehicles, or five years against property or land. A five-year term should therefore not be assumed available with vehicle security. A property-backed offer introduces additional security costs and puts property at risk; compare its total repayment with a shorter offer before choosing the smaller instalment.
Will Admiral charge me if I repay early or refinance elsewhere?
The dated fee schedule lists NZ$65 for early settlement plus possible prepayment compensation, while the FAQs say loans issued from July 2017 have no settlement fee. These disclosures conflict. Request written confirmation of your agreement’s terms and, when refinancing, a dated settlement figure including any security-release costs. Compare that figure and the new lender’s charges with the remaining cost of keeping the existing loan.
Is payment protection compulsory, and does it replace insurance on the secured asset?
Admiral’s calculator disclosure describes payment protection as optional. Its 2021 agreement template separately requires insurance on pledged assets. The template’s payment protection is a payment waiver, with exclusions including pre-existing conditions and redundancy for self-employed people. Confirm current asset-insurance requirements separately from optional repayment cover, and request the premium, exclusions and any interest charged on financed cover.
What repayment support does Admiral offer if my circumstances change?
Admiral’s hardship guidance requests updated contact details, three months of bank statements and an explanation of the difficulty. Contact Credit Control on 0800 200 215 promptly. If a payment arrangement is offered, request the revised end date, interest, fees and total repayable: temporary payment relief may extend the debt. Debt management support can help assess the proposal.
Which complaints scheme covers Admiral Finance?
Start with complaints@admiralfinance.co.nz or 0800 200 261. Admiral’s complaints page names Financial Services Complaints Limited, available free on 0800 347 257, but another page names the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman. Confirm the legal lender and dispute scheme shown in your agreement before escalating an unresolved complaint.
