Max Loans personal loans: summary

  • Provider: Max Loans is a trading name of Max Money Group Limited. It arranges finance through other lenders rather than lending its own money.
  • Purpose and security: Personal expenses, renovations, vehicles and debt consolidation, with secured and unsecured options subject to assessment.
  • Amounts and terms: Applications start at $1,000; the maximum is assessed individually. Product disclosures specify 12–84 months, although the calculator also mentions a six-month minimum.
  • Interest and APR: Advertised annual interest is 8.99%–29.99%. Published APR is 9.72%–30.86%, qualified by example assumptions and exclusions; your actual cost depends on the offer.
  • Fees: An advice fee may apply, capped at $1,095 for standard personal loans, alongside lender charges.
  • Insurance: The published example excludes optional insurance. Confirm whether the selected lender requires any cover.
  • Eligibility and application: Applicants must be at least 18 and pass lender checks. Apply online; income, residency, credit history and supporting documents are assessed.
  • Best fit and limitation: Useful for borrowers wanting help approaching several lenders. Its value depends on whether the resulting offer remains competitive after broker fees and other costs.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on Max Loans

When comparing an offer arranged through Max Loans, I would ask: “If I need $10,000, what balance will I start repaying to receive that full amount?” Fees added to the loan can make those figures different, and you may pay interest on the difference. At LoansFinder, we encourage comparisons using the same cash amount and repayment term, with all fees included. That helps you judge whether the broker has found a more economical loan, or whether the assistance provided is worth any additional cost.

Max Loans eligibility and required documents

Applicants must be at least 18. The terms exclude undischarged bankrupts, while Max Loans’ bad-credit guidance also excludes applicants currently under a No Asset Procedure.

The application asks whether weekly net income exceeds $500 and, where relevant, whether a co-borrower earns over $500 weekly. It also asks about residency, visa expiry and a co-borrower’s residence status. Confirm eligibility if your income is near that threshold or you hold a temporary visa; completing the form does not establish approval.

Expect to provide identification and usually two months of bank statements. The assessment covers earnings, living costs, existing debts and foreseeable changes to your finances. Additional evidence, security or a guarantor may be required. Credit and verification checks are authorised through the application terms.

Who should consider a Max Loans personal loan?

Max Loans may suit someone who wants assistance presenting their circumstances to potential lenders, particularly when a straightforward bank application does not fit. Unsecured borrowing avoids pledging an asset, although eligibility may be stricter and pricing may differ.

For borrowers with a strong credit record, compare a direct bank or credit-union quotation against the broker-arranged offer using the same cash amount and repayment term. Browse other personal loan options to assess whether the advice fee delivers sufficient value.

For debt consolidation, compare the remaining cost of existing debts with the complete replacement loan. A smaller instalment can result from extending repayment rather than reducing the total cost. If essentials already exceed income, consider debt-management support before taking on further borrowing.

How borrowing through Max Loans works

Application and assessment

  1. Complete the official application with your requested amount, purpose and financial details.
  2. Provide supporting documents and discuss suitable lender options with an adviser.
  3. Review the selected lender’s offer, including the cash you receive, financed fees, security, repayments and total payable.
  4. Proceed only after the lender’s conditions are satisfied and you understand the agreement.

Max Money Group’s privacy statement permits information sharing with lenders, insurers, verification services and other service providers. Ask which lenders will receive your application and which credit checks will be recorded.

How long does it take?

The product pages estimate 5–10 minutes to complete the online application. That is not an approval or funding timeframe. The FAQs say processing depends on the loan and receipt of the required information; they do not commit to same-day payment.

For application enquiries, the verified contact number is 0800 275 629. The Auckland office is at D1, 27–29 William Pickering Drive, Rosedale, Auckland 0632.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Who is the lender, which alternatives were considered, and why was this offer selected?
  • How much cash will I receive, and what will the opening balance be after fees and insurance?
  • What are the personalised interest rate, repayment schedule and total amount payable?
  • What remuneration does Max Loans receive, and what advice fee will I pay?
  • Is security, a guarantor or insurance required, and what obligations follow?
  • What charges apply to missed payments, extra repayments and full early settlement?

Max Loans advantages and limitations

  • Assisted comparison: One adviser can approach lenders on its panel, reducing the need to explain your circumstances separately.
  • Security choices: Secured and unsecured borrowing allow different approaches to eligibility and asset risk.
  • Limited market coverage: A panel recommendation does not establish the cheapest available market-wide offer.
  • Cost trade-off: Financed fees can erode the benefit of a lower interest rate, particularly on smaller loans.
  • Asset exposure: Pledging a vehicle or property can put that asset at risk if repayments fail.

Max Loans interest, fees and total cost

The advertised annual interest range is 8.99%–29.99%. The selected lender determines your rate using your circumstances and loan structure. The published APR range of 9.72%–30.86% is qualified by the website’s example assumptions and may exclude early-repayment, default and transaction charges. It is not a personalised all-inclusive quotation.

Under the service disclosure, the advice fee may be up to 10% of the finance amount plus $95 administration, subject to a $1,095 total cap for standard personal loans. A $2,500 cap applies to large debt consolidations involving property caveats. The advice fee is added to the loan and paid to Max Loans by the lender, increasing the balance on which interest may accrue.

Lender establishment and other charges vary. Request the complete fee schedule, including any security-registration, account, default and early-settlement costs. Max Loans may also receive lender or insurance commissions.

The official calculator uses 17.95% as an illustrative rate. Its six-month minimum conflicts with the 12–84-month range in the product and rate disclosures; confirm the available term in writing.

Published repayment example

Max Loans publishes a $40,000 loan over 60 months at 8.99% annual interest, with $9,808 interest, a $200 establishment fee and a $495 adviser fee, producing $50,503 total repayments. It assumes monthly repayments and excludes optional insurance premiums.

The components add up, but our calculation indicates that the interest figure is consistent with interest on $40,000 alone. The example does not clearly reconcile this with the separate disclosure that the advice fee is financed. Obtain a repayment schedule showing interest on any added fees before relying on that total.

Insurance and security costs

No universal compulsory-insurance requirement was established from the sources reviewed. Ask the selected lender whether asset cover is required and distinguish it from optional repayment protection. Before accepting insurance, check the premium, exclusions, waiting periods and claim eligibility. Financing a premium can add interest to its cost.

Is Max Loans worth considering?

Max Loans’ strongest feature is assistance finding a lender suited to your circumstances. Its main limitation is that this convenience can carry an additional financed fee. The decisive comparison is the total payable for the same cash received over the same term, alongside security requirements and monthly affordability. A lower advertised rate alone is insufficient evidence of better value.

Max Loans personal loan FAQs

Is Max Loans a lender, and does it compare the whole market?

Max Loans is a broker: another lender supplies the money and sets your contractual terms. Its advice is limited to a disclosed panel, so a recommendation does not establish that it is the cheapest offer across New Zealand. Ask which lenders were considered and compare the recommendation with a direct quotation for the same cash amount and repayment term.

Could Max Loans’ advice fee outweigh a lower interest rate?

Yes, particularly on a smaller loan. Its disclosed advice fee is up to 10% of the finance amount plus $95, capped at $1,095 for standard personal loans. A separate $2,500 cap applies to large debt consolidations involving property caveats. The fee is added to the loan, so it can also attract interest. Compare the total repayable after broker fees, lender charges and any insurance, rather than judging the offer by its interest rate alone.

Is the advertised rate or APR a reliable guide to my offer?

Max Loans advertises annual interest of 8.99%–29.99%, but your rate depends on the lender’s assessment. Its published APR range of 9.72%–30.86% is qualified by example assumptions and may exclude default, early-repayment and transaction charges. The calculator uses a separate illustrative rate of 17.95%. These figures serve different purposes: request a quotation showing your actual rate, financed balance, instalments and total payable.

Does Max Loans distinguish between different types of bad credit?

Yes. Its published guidance suggests unsecured borrowing may be considered where there is no more than one bank or finance-company default that has been paid, plus no more than two small unpaid defaults elsewhere. A finance default still being repaid may instead require consideration of secured borrowing. These are screening guidelines, not approval promises. Current bankruptcy or a No Asset Procedure excludes assistance under that guidance.

Does one broker application mean only one credit check?

Do not assume so. Max Loans’ terms authorise it or its product providers to perform credit and verification checks. One application form does not establish that only one lender will access your credit record. Before proceeding, ask which lenders will receive your information, whether an initial assessment can occur without a recorded credit enquiry, and when further checks would be requested.

Will paying the loan off early remove the broker fee?

Early repayment can reduce future interest, but it does not by itself establish a refund of an advice fee already financed. Max Loans says most panel lenders do not charge an interest penalty for early repayment; other settlement charges may still apply. If you expect to repay ahead of schedule, request an indicative settlement calculation and written confirmation of any refundable or non-refundable charges.

When would consolidating debts through Max Loans cost more?

It can cost more when the new term extends repayment substantially or added fees outweigh interest savings. Max Loans says consolidation lenders usually pay existing creditors directly. Compare their current settlement balances and remaining repayments with the full cost of the replacement loan, including any exit charges and new fees. If unsecured debts would become secured against an asset, that also changes your risk. See our debt consolidation comparison guide.

Who handles repayment problems after Max Loans arranges the loan?

Start with the lender named in your agreement because it administers the debt and considers changes to repayments. Contact it before arrears build, explain what has changed and ask how any proposed arrangement affects interest, fees and the repayment term. FSCL recommends early contact and support from a free financial mentor where needed.

Should I complain to Max Loans or the lender?

Raise concerns about the broker’s recommendation, advice fee or application handling with Max Loans on 0800 275 629 or info@maxmoneygroup.co.nz. Its disclosure names Financial Services Complaints Limited as its external dispute-resolution service, reachable on 0800 347 257. Concerns about repayments, interest charged or hardship handling should follow the lender’s complaints process and the dispute-resolution scheme named in its disclosure.
