Review basis: Researched on 16 October 2026 using Loansmart’s official bad credit loan page, pricing, disclosure statement, FAQs, application form, privacy policy and insurance information. The pricing page displays no effective date. Conflicting rate disclosures and unclear GST treatment in its example are explained below. Loan Smart bad credit loans: eligibility, costs and limits
- Provider and purpose: Loansmart Limited is a loan broker arranging personal finance through a lender panel, including applications from people with previous defaults or missed payments.
- Amounts and terms: Advertises up to NZ$75,000 unsecured, with larger secured options potentially available, over 6–84 months. These are advertised limits, subject to individual assessment; a universal minimum amount was not verified.
- Interest and APR: Its product and pricing pages advertise annual interest of 9.95%–32.50%, depending on credit assessment. Other official wording conflicts. The published 19.33% APR relates to one example, not every applicant; see pricing qualifications.
- Fees: Applying is free. An arranged loan may carry a Loansmart fee of up to 5% of the loan amount plus NZ$245, capped at NZ$995 unsecured or NZ$1,995 secured, GST exclusive. Lender charges are additional where applicable.
- Security and insurance: Security may be requested. Insurance products sold through Loansmart are optional, but property offered as security must be insured. Pledged assets are at risk if repayments fail.
- Eligibility and application: Applicants must live in New Zealand, provide valid photo ID and demonstrate affordability. Apply online or discuss your circumstances by phone; bad credit acceptance is conditional.
- Best fit and main limitation: Potentially useful when past credit problems need explanation and current finances have improved. Broker and lender charges can make an affordable-looking repayment expensive overall.
Alexander Balanoff on Loan Smart
After a loan rejection, an approval can feel more valuable than it really is. With Loan Smart, I would ask which alternatives were considered and why the recommended offer justifies the broker fee. Access to several lenders is useful, but its value depends on the offer you receive. A lower interest rate can lose its advantage once brokerage and lender charges are included, particularly on a smaller loan. At LoansFinder, we encourage comparisons based on the same cash amount, repayment term and complete cost. That helps you judge whether an offer improves your options while leaving enough room in your budget for unexpected expenses.
What you need to qualify with Loan Smart
Loansmart considers the circumstances behind poor credit and what has changed since. Its FAQs indicate that up-to-date current commitments and well-managed bank accounts can support an application. Previous defaults do not automatically rule you out, but approval still depends on the selected lender’s assessment.
- Identity and residence: Live in New Zealand and provide a valid driver licence or passport. The application requests residency or visa details where relevant.
- Financial evidence: Usually provide three months of bank statements to confirm income and assess repayments against expenses and existing debts.
- Further information: Explain defaults and disclose expected income or expense changes. Additional documents or security may be requested.
A complete bad credit eligibility checklist, including minimum age, income thresholds and visa restrictions, was not established from the checked product materials. Confirm these requirements before submitting an application.
Who should consider this service?
Loansmart may suit someone whose credit record reflects an earlier problem but whose present budget can support a new repayment. Its broker model provides access to several lenders through one application, although its panel does not represent the whole market.
If borrowing would cover a recurring shortfall in rent, food or existing repayments, explore support with managing debt first. If your finances have recovered, compare mainstream personal loan options too. A bad credit label alone is not a reason to accept an expensive offer.
How the application works
Application and assessment
- Complete the official application, or call 0800 255 155 to discuss your circumstances.
- Supply identification and bank statements. A consultant reviews your needs and seeks suitable lending options.
- Check the proposed lender, interest, fees, security and repayment schedule before signing electronically.
- Funds can be released after approval, signed documents and any outstanding conditions are satisfied.
Loansmart’s privacy policy permits information sharing with lenders, insurers and service providers for the stated purposes. One broker application does not establish that only one credit enquiry will occur; ask which lenders will receive it and what checks they will make.
How quickly could you receive funds?
Loansmart advertises decisions in around one to two hours for qualifying applications and possible same-day payment. Its bad credit page says it needs all required information before 3 pm for this turnaround. Assessment, contract completion and bank processing can delay receipt until the following day or later.
Repayment support and complaints
Contact the actual lender promptly if repayments become difficult and ask about hardship or payment arrangements. Loansmart’s general contact is enquiries@loansmart.co.nz or 0800 255 155, weekdays 8 am–5 pm.
For a complaint about Loansmart, use its complaints process. It names Financial Services Complaints Limited as its external dispute service. Unresolved complaints can be discussed with FSCL on 0800 347 257, without a consumer complaint fee. A complaint about the lender may follow a different scheme.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
- Who is lending the money, and which alternatives were considered?
- What cash will I receive, what balance will I owe, and what is the total repayment including GST, fees and any insurance?
- Is the interest fixed, and what are the late-payment, ongoing and early-settlement charges?
- What security or insurance is required, and what happens if I miss repayments?
- What commissions does Loansmart receive, and what costs remain if I cancel?
Loan Smart advantages and limitations
- Individual consideration: The broker considers explanations for adverse credit and evidence of improved finances.
- Access to alternatives: Its published disclosure lists 11 personal and vehicle lenders, with additional referral partners.
- Additional cost: Brokerage can sit alongside lender establishment fees and other charges.
- Limited comparison: Panel access is not a whole-market search. Loansmart may receive lender, insurance or referral commissions.
- Pricing uncertainty: Published rate wording needs clarification, and an advertised starting rate says little about an individual bad credit offer.
Loan Smart interest, fees and total repayment
Interest rates are not the same as APR
The dedicated product and pricing pages advertise 9.95%–32.50% annual interest. However, an official borrowing-cost guide gives an upper rate of 35.50%, while the general FAQs label the 9.95%–32.50% range as APR. These disclosures are inconsistent. Obtain written confirmation of your annual interest rate and a fee-inclusive comparison before relying on either range.
Brokerage and lender charges
The fee schedule states up to 5% of the loan amount plus NZ$245, capped at NZ$995 for unsecured borrowing or NZ$1,995 for secured borrowing, GST exclusive. Request the final GST-inclusive charge. The fee can be paid separately or financed; financing it increases the balance on which interest is charged.
Lender establishment, account, default and early-settlement charges depend on the selected agreement. The fixed NZ$245 component makes the brokerage proportionately more significant on smaller loans.
Insurance costs and exclusions
Loansmart describes its insurance products as optional, while requiring proof of insurance for property used as security. Ask whether your particular offer requires other asset cover. Premiums may be financed, adding interest to their cost.
Its CreditCare overview identifies exclusions for specified pre-existing conditions, known circumstances and arrears arising before an insured event. Benefits depend on the cover selected, eligibility, waiting periods and limits; request the policy wording before deciding.
Published example: NZ$10,000 over five years
Loansmart’s published illustration uses NZ$10,000 over 60 months at 14.95% annual interest, with a NZ$215 lender establishment fee and NZ$745 Loansmart fee. It states weekly repayments of NZ$59.91, total repayment of NZ$15,576.98 and 19.33% APR.
For budgeting, NZ$59.91 weekly averages approximately NZ$259.61 a month, calculated as 52 weekly payments divided by 12. This is not a monthly repayment quotation. The example does not explain its GST treatment or include an identified insurance premium. Obtain an itemised repayment schedule; these published figures are not a personalised bad credit offer.
Cancellation costs
Loansmart states that cancelling before funds are advanced carries no fee. Its disclosure says the brokerage fee is non-refundable after payout, even when cancellation occurs within the agreement’s cancellation period. Ask for the complete cancellation amount and terms before funds are released.
Is Loan Smart worth considering for bad credit?
Our assessment is that Loansmart’s strongest feature is the opportunity to explain past credit problems while comparing options through a broker. Its main limitation is the combined cost of brokerage and lender charges, compounded by inconsistent public pricing wording. Compare offers using the same cash advance and repayment period. For debt consolidation, check whether total remaining costs fall, rather than relying on a smaller instalment achieved by extending the debt.
Loan Smart bad credit loan FAQs
How does using Loan Smart compare with applying directly to a lender?
Loansmart is a broker with a panel of 11 personal and vehicle lenders, rather than a lender assessing only its own product. This provides several possible routes, but does not mean every panel member will consider your application. Its disclosure statement also identifies borrower fees and possible lender commissions. Ask which lenders were considered and compare any recommended offer with a direct quote for the same cash amount and repayment term, including brokerage.
Can Loan Smart help after a bank decline or previous defaults?
Possibly. Loansmart considers explanations for adverse credit and evidence that your circumstances have improved. Its FAQs specifically mention up-to-date current commitments and well-managed bank accounts, and it usually requests three months of bank statements. A previous decline does not establish that its panel will also decline you, but the reason matters: an old default and an ongoing inability to afford repayments present different problems. Explain the earlier decision before authorising further applications.
Does one Loan Smart application mean only one credit check?
One application does not establish that only one credit enquiry will be recorded. Loansmart describes credit checks as part of its assessment, so this is not a no-credit-check service. Before proceeding, ask whether the broker checks your file, which lenders may run separate checks, and whether an initial discussion can take place without a recorded enquiry. This matters when comparing brokers, because repeated credit applications can affect how subsequent lenders assess you.
Can I borrow without security if I have bad credit?
Loansmart advertises up to NZ$75,000 unsecured for qualifying applicants, but this is a general ceiling rather than a bad credit allowance. It may seek vehicle or property security where an unsecured application is difficult to place. If security is proposed, ask whether a smaller unsecured loan is available and compare the total cost of both options. A lower secured interest rate needs to be weighed against additional charges, any required asset insurance and the risk to the pledged asset.
How should I compare Loan Smart’s advertised rate with another provider’s offer?
The 9.95% starting rate is annual interest, excluding fees, and your lender sets the actual rate after assessment. Loansmart’s public wording also conflicts: its product and pricing pages give a 32.50% upper rate, while another official guide states 35.50%. Request a personalised written quote identifying annual interest, any fee-inclusive APR and total repayment. Compare identical amounts and terms; a smaller instalment obtained by extending the loan does not establish that the offer costs less.
Is applying free, and how much could the broker fee add?
Applying is free. The published service fee is up to 5% of the loan amount plus NZ$245, capped at NZ$995 unsecured or NZ$1,995 secured, GST exclusive. Lender charges may be additional. As an illustration, applying the full formula to NZ$5,000 produces NZ$495 before GST, lender charges and interest—9.9% of that amount, not an APR. This makes the fee particularly relevant when comparing smaller loans. Financing it also adds interest to its cost.
What needs to happen for a same-day payout?
Loansmart’s bad credit page says it needs all required information before 3 pm for its advertised same-day turnaround, subject to assessment. Approval, signed documents and any additional conditions must still be completed, and bank processing can push receipt into the following day. For an urgent expense, ask whether the application is awaiting lender approval, documentation or payment. An initial indication that finance looks possible is not confirmation that funds have been released.
What should I check if I plan to repay early or refinance later?
Ask the proposed lender about extra repayments, full early settlement and any associated charges before accepting. These terms depend on the lender Loansmart selects. If you expect to refinance after your credit improves, compare the interest you might save with settlement charges and fresh establishment or brokerage fees. Loansmart also states that its service fee is non-refundable after payout if you cancel, so a quick change of plan can still leave a material cost.
Will this loan remove defaults or help me qualify for cheaper borrowing?
A new loan does not remove existing defaults. Reliable repayments can support your credit history, but approval or a better rate later depends on your wider circumstances. Consumer Protection explains that payment defaults can remain on your file for five years, even after repayment. If the expense can wait, check for errors and establish whether existing negative entries are nearing expiry before paying interest and brokerage solely to try to improve your score.
