Review basis: Researched on 6 October 2026 using Alternate Finance’s personal loan product page, personal loans overview, rates and fees schedule, FAQs, application form and published loan documents. Privacy, contact and complaints information was also checked. The fee schedule is marked last updated 24 July 2025; the standard disclosure is dated 24 November 2024. Published amounts, terms and charges conflict in places, as explained below. No personalised quotation was obtained or application submitted. Suitability and value judgements are editorial assessments. All amounts are in New Zealand dollars.

Alternate Finance personal loans: security, costs and eligibility

  • Provider and purpose: Alternate Finance Limited is a Christchurch-based lender serving borrowers across New Zealand. Personal loans can cover expenses such as repairs, medical bills and debt consolidation.
  • Amounts and terms: The product page describes loans from $800 to $30,000, but the FAQs still state a $15,000 maximum. The fee schedule normally limits terms to three years, while the overview mentions 12–48 months. Confirm the available amount and term directly.
  • Interest and APR: Advertised fixed interest is 9.95%–26.98% p.a., with the offered rate depending on the application. A separate fee-inclusive APR was not identified in the checked sources.
  • Fees: Establishment, monthly administration and applicable security charges affect the total cost. Published fee figures differ between pages; early settlement can also attract charges.
  • Eligibility and security: Applicants generally need to be at least 18, meet residency requirements and demonstrate repayment capacity. The application requires security or a supporting borrower who can provide it. Beneficiary applications are capped at $4,000.
  • Insurance: A vehicle offered as security must be warranted, registered and insured. The compulsory status and pricing of payment-waiver or fire-protection cover were not confirmed.
  • Application and suitability: Apply through the lender’s online form. This may suit borrowers with acceptable security and sufficient income, including some applicants with previous credit difficulties. The principal drawbacks are the asset risk and inconsistent published cost information.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on Alternate Finance

When considering Alternate Finance, I would ask what the proposed security means to your daily life. A car you need for work has a value beyond its resale price: losing it could also disrupt the income you rely on for repayments. Compare the total repayment on secured and unsecured offers for the same amount and term, then ask whether any saving justifies that exposure. That is the wider comparison we encourage at LoansFinder: weigh the cost of borrowing alongside the consequences of putting an essential asset at risk.

Alternate Finance eligibility and required documents

The product page specifies New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency. The broader overview also mentions eligible long-term visa holders, without defining qualifying visas. Visa holders should obtain confirmation before submitting an application.

Prepare photo identification, recent bank statements and evidence of employment, self-employment or benefit income. Approval depends on credit checks and whether repayments fit your income, living costs and existing commitments. No consistent minimum income threshold was identified.

The application form asks about your address, employment, insolvency history and proposed security. For vehicle security, it requests registration, insurance and outstanding finance details. If someone provides security as a supporting borrower, ask the lender to explain that person’s repayment obligations and asset exposure before either party signs.

Who should consider this personal loan?

Alternate Finance may be worth comparing if you need a defined amount, have acceptable security and can repay without relying on further borrowing. Its willingness to consider benefit income and previous credit difficulties gives some applicants another route to assessment, but does not establish affordability or approval.

Reconsider if repayments would absorb your remaining household buffer, or losing the proposed security would jeopardise your transport, work or housing. Compare other personal loan options, including unsecured offers, before committing an asset.

For debt consolidation, compare the new total repayment with the remaining cost of your existing debts. A smaller instalment can result from extending the term, and replacing unsecured balances with secured borrowing introduces an additional risk.

How to apply to Alternate Finance

Application and assessment

Complete the lender’s online application with the amount requested, intended use, identity, income and security information. Provide supporting documents when requested, then review the written offer and full agreement before accepting.

The privacy policy, updated 18 June 2026, describes credit checks and repayment reporting through agencies including Centrix and Equifax. The application consent still references the Privacy Act 1993, while the privacy policy references the Privacy Act 2020. Ask for clarification of the current consent wording if its scope is unclear.

For assistance, the contact page lists 0800 695 626, info@alternate.co.nz and 3 Shirley Road, Christchurch. Published office hours are Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm.

Decision and funding times

The lender advertises assessment within 60 minutes during business hours. Its product page describes funding within 24 hours after approval, while the FAQs allow 24–48 hours. These are advertised estimates; outstanding documents, credit checks and acceptance of the agreement can affect timing.

Questions to resolve before signing

  • What amount will reach my account, what balance will I owe initially, and what is the total repayment including every compulsory charge?
  • Which published loan limit, repayment term and fee schedule applies to this offer?
  • Which assets secure the debt, and what obligations would a supporting borrower take on?
  • Is insurance, fire protection or payment-waiver cover required? What does each cost, exclude and add to the financed balance?
  • What would early settlement cost, and how are default interest and collection charges calculated?
  • The sample disclosure describes an “at call” loan. In what circumstances could you demand repayment before the scheduled end date?

Request the complete operative terms as well as the initial disclosure: the public sample refers to clauses that are not included in that document.

Alternate Finance advantages and limitations

  • Fixed interest: Your accepted rate remains fixed for the agreed term, making interest-rate exposure easier to assess.
  • Broader income assessment: Benefit income and some adverse credit histories can be considered, subject to security and repayment capacity.
  • Security exposure: Default can put pledged assets at risk. A supporting borrower also needs to understand the commitment.
  • Unclear public pricing: Conflicting limits, fees and settlement information make a written quotation essential for a meaningful comparison.

Regulatory history: The Commerce Commission’s closed case record states that Alternate Finance was fined $51,750 and ordered to pay over $12,000 in statutory damages over security interests in prohibited consumer goods. The case closed on 13 March 2019; it is historical, rather than evidence about an individual current offer.

Alternate Finance interest, fees and total cost

The advertised interest range excludes fees. Compare the amount received with every scheduled payment and upfront cost, rather than treating the lowest advertised rate as the price you will receive.

Charges in the dated fee schedule

The 24 July 2025 schedule describes its fees as maximum amounts; lower charges may apply.

  • Establishment: $135 for $800–$1,000; $195 for $1,001–$1,999; $245 for $2,000–$4,999; $295 for $5,000–$7,499; $395 for $7,500–$11,999; $495 for $12,000–$24,999; $595 for $25,000–$39,999.
  • Monthly administration: $10, plus $5 per additional borrower.
  • Security registration: PPSR registration is $10 automatically or $20 manually. Property security involves additional registration and release costs.
  • Early settlement: $65 administration plus a calculated prepayment charge where applicable.

Published pricing differences

The personal loans overview quotes a $245 establishment fee and $5 monthly fee beside its $5,000 example. The dedicated product page says there are no monthly charges. Neither matches the schedule above. The FAQs also quote early settlement at $110 plus six weeks’ interest.

Default wording is inconsistent: the schedule describes 9.95 percentage points above ordinary interest, then separately states 9.95% p.a. The older disclosure contains different default rates. Obtain the applicable rate, calculation basis and collection fees in writing.

The sample disclosure additionally lists payment-method charges, including $0.45 for direct debit and $1 for manually accepted payments. Confirm whether these apply to your offer.

Illustration: the fee burden before interest

For a $5,000 loan over 24 months with one borrower, applying the scheduled $295 establishment fee and $10 monthly charge gives $535 in these fees alone. That equals 10.7% of the cash borrowed; it is not an APR. This original calculation excludes interest, security registration, payment charges, insurance, waiver cover and contingent fees. It is not a repayment quotation.

Insurance and payment-waiver cover

Allow for required vehicle insurance in your budget. The disclosure also contains separate fields for fire-protection and payment-waiver fees, but does not establish their price or whether they apply to every borrower.

The published payment-waiver summary generally covers the first named borrower aged over 18 and under 65. Exclusions include pre-existing conditions, psychiatric or psychological illness, certain sports and payment arrears. Redundancy cover excludes self-employed borrowers and has employment-history requirements, a seven-day exclusion and a 181-day limit. Check the complete wording and your eligibility before paying for cover.

Is an Alternate Finance personal loan worth considering?

Its strongest feature is access to assessment for borrowers whose income or credit history may require individual consideration. Its main limitation is that the public information does not provide a consistent account of the final cost.

Compare a written offer against another loan for the same cash amount and repayment period. Any saving should be meaningful enough to justify the security commitment. If the lender cannot reconcile its charges clearly, the advertised starting rate is insufficient grounds to proceed.

Alternate Finance personal loan questions

Can I borrow without putting my own assets at risk?

The dedicated product page says Alternate Finance does not offer unsecured loans, despite its broader overview discussing both loan types. Its application allows a supporting borrower to provide security if you cannot. This transfers asset exposure to another person rather than removing it. Ask whether that person will also be liable for repayments, and compare an unsecured offer before involving someone else’s property.

Can I borrow more than $15,000 or repay over four years?

The published information does not give a consistent answer. The personal loan product page describes $800–$30,000, while the FAQs state a $15,000 maximum. The fee schedule normally allows up to three years, but the overview mentions 12–48 months. Ask for confirmation of the amount and term available for your circumstances. Higher borrowing bands in a general fee schedule do not establish that those amounts are available for this personal loan.

Could a loan with a higher interest rate cost less than Alternate Finance?

Yes, if the competing loan’s fees are sufficiently lower. Using Alternate Finance’s dated fee schedule, a $5,000 loan over 24 months with one borrower incurs $535 in establishment and monthly administration fees alone, before interest and other applicable costs. This is an illustration, not a quotation, and other pages quote different fees. Compare personal loan offers for the same cash received and repayment period, using the total amount payable.

Is Alternate Finance suitable if I expect to repay early?

Early settlement is possible, but its cost needs clarification. The fee schedule lists $65 administration plus a calculated prepayment charge where applicable; the FAQs instead state $110 plus six weeks’ interest. Ask for an indicative settlement calculation at your expected repayment date, including security-release costs. Compare that amount with a lender offering lower exit charges: a lower starting rate may not produce the cheaper loan when you settle ahead of schedule.

Does offering security improve my chances with bad credit?

Alternate Finance says it considers some applicants with adverse credit where suitable security is available. However, an asset does not replace evidence that repayments are affordable. Before submitting a full application, ask whether your particular credit issues fall within its lending criteria and when a credit enquiry will be recorded. When comparing loans for borrowers with adverse credit, consider the offered rate, fees and assets exposed, rather than approval prospects alone.

Can beneficiaries borrow, and does the general loan maximum apply?

Beneficiaries can apply, but the application form specifies a separate $4,000 maximum. The lender’s FAQs require evidence of benefit income, and security and affordability checks still apply. The general advertised loan range should therefore not be treated as available to every beneficiary. If vehicle security is proposed, include the required insurance cost when assessing whether repayments fit your budget.

Would consolidating debts with Alternate Finance leave me better off?

It could, but a lower weekly repayment is not sufficient evidence of a saving. Compare the new loan’s total repayments, establishment charges and any fees for settling existing debts against the remaining cost of those debts. Extending repayment can increase the overall cost. Also assess the change in security: using a vehicle or property to replace unsecured balances exposes that asset if you default. Compare debt consolidation options on both cost and security requirements.

What support is available if my circumstances change after borrowing?

The published disclosure describes written applications for unforeseen hardship, subject to eligibility and timing conditions. Contact the lender promptly and explain what changed, what you can currently afford and whether you need postponed payments or a longer term. Ask how any arrangement affects interest and the total repayment. A new consolidation loan creates a fresh borrowing commitment; compare it with assistance under your existing agreement and independent debt-management support.

How can I challenge an unexpected fee or unresolved complaint?

Send the quotation, agreement and relevant statements to info@alternate.co.nz, identifying the disputed charge and the outcome you seek, or call 0800 695 626. The lender’s complaints procedure targets acknowledgement within 1–2 working days and a response within 20 working days. It directs unresolved complaints to the free Financial Dispute Resolution Service, on 0508 337 337.
