Smartcash payday loans: costs, limits and eligibility
- Provider and purpose: Smartcash Limited offers online, unsecured loans for temporary expenses between paydays.
- Amounts and terms: NZ$100–$300 over 2–31 days, subject to assessment, with repayments aligned to paydays.
- Interest and APR: Published interest is 0.134% daily, described in the terms as 49% annual interest. A marketing page calls the same figure “APR”, but fees are additional; it should not be read as an all-inclusive borrowing cost.
- Fees and insurance: $55 establishment plus $5 per payment processed. Same-day transfer, credit-check, wage-deduction and missed-payment charges may apply. No compulsory loan insurance was identified in the checked terms.
- Eligibility: Generally, applicants must be 18 or older, legally resident in New Zealand, permanently employed for at least three months and earning at least $400 weekly after tax. Credit and affordability checks apply.
- Application: Apply directly online. Decisions may take around an hour during business hours once the required information is available. Same-day funding has conditions and costs $10.
- Suitability and limitation: Potentially suitable for a small, isolated expense repayable from upcoming income. Fixed fees make small advances expensive, while the short term leaves limited room for a tight budget.
Alexander Balanoff on Smartcash
With a small Smartcash loan, I would look closely at what happens after repayment. Once the loan and fees leave your account, will you have enough for essentials until your next payday? If you need another advance to get through, repeated establishment fees can become more significant than the advertised interest rate suggests. At LoansFinder, we encourage comparing the full borrowing cost and the budget left afterwards. The useful test is whether you can clear the expense and repay without creating another shortfall.
Smartcash eligibility and required documents
The published criteria require:
- Age 18 or over and legal New Zealand residency.
- At least three months of continuous, permanent employment, earning at least $400 a week after tax. ACC, StudyLink and Work and Income payments do not count towards this employment-income requirement.
- A New Zealand bank account receiving your earnings, an email account and an active mobile phone.
- No current loan with another online payday lender.
Prepare proof of identity, employer and payroll details, information about expenses and existing debts, and your latest three months of bank statements. Smartcash checks credit history and seeks permission to verify employment and pay. Meeting the minimum criteria does not establish affordability or secure approval.
When a Smartcash payday loan may fit
This product may fit an employed borrower facing a one-off expense who can clear the full balance within a month. The practical test is whether each repayment leaves enough for rent, food, transport and existing commitments until the following payday.
Reconsider if you regularly borrow for household bills, need more than $300 or expect to need an extension. Ask whether the bill provider can offer a payment arrangement, or whether an employer advance or existing bank facility would cost less. When comparing payday loan options, use the same amount and repayment dates. For a recurring shortfall, explore help with managing debt.
Applying and repaying
Application process
Complete Smartcash’s online application, review the loan documents and electronically sign if you accept them. New applicants must also confirm their email address. Smartcash then obtains supporting information, conducts its checks and communicates the decision by email. Signing the documents does not mean final approval.
Repayments normally leave your bank account on paydays. The published options allow up to four weekly payments, two fortnightly payments or repayment on the next monthly payday, within the product’s term. Manual payments or employer wage deductions may be requested.
The privacy provisions permit information checks with employers, credit-reporting agencies and other lenders, and disclosures for debt recovery. Read these permissions before signing.
Decision and payout timing
Smartcash advertises decisions in about 60 minutes, subject to receiving information and completing checks. Business hours are 9am–5pm, Monday–Friday, excluding public holidays. Same-day transfer requires approval before 3.30pm on a normal business day, costs $10 and depends on bank processing. Standard overnight transfer has no additional transfer fee.
Questions to resolve before accepting
- What cash will reach my account, and what is the full amount repayable on each date?
- Will the $15 credit-check fee or $20 wage-deduction fee apply?
- How many $5 payment-processing charges are included, and is interest charged on any fees?
- What would early settlement cost, and what happens if my pay arrives late or my employment ends?
Smartcash advantages and limitations
- No asset security: You do not need to pledge a car or other property, although unpaid debt can still lead to collection action.
- Payday-aligned repayments: The schedule can follow weekly, fortnightly or monthly income.
- Substantial fixed charges: Establishment and one payment-processing fee total $60 before interest or conditional charges.
- Restricted eligibility and repayment window: Employment requirements, the $300 ceiling and repayment within 31 days limit its usefulness.
Smartcash interest, fees and total repayment
The fee schedule publishes interest of 0.134% daily, described as 49% annual interest. Although the payday marketing page labels 49% “APR”, it lists fees separately. Compare the dollar total, rather than treating that percentage as the complete cost.
- Establishment: $55.
- Payment processing: $5 for each payment processed.
- Same-day transfer: $10 if selected.
- Credit check: $15 when applicable.
- Wage deduction: $20 when applicable.
- Rescheduling: $20 for an agreed change to a payment amount or date.
- Default: $30 for a scheduled payment default.
Fixed fees have a disproportionate effect on smaller advances: $60 represents 60% of a $100 loan, compared with 20% of a $300 loan, before interest. That is a reason to compare alternatives, not to borrow more than you need.
Illustrative cost of borrowing $300 for 14 days
Our calculation, not a Smartcash quotation: Assume one repayment after 14 days, simple interest on the $300 advance only, a $55 establishment fee, one $5 processing fee, a $15 credit check and a $10 same-day transfer. Interest would be $5.63, giving one repayment of $390.63 and a borrowing cost of $90.63.
This assumes fees are paid at settlement and excludes interest on fees, wage deductions, rescheduling, default and collection costs. Your actual disclosure may differ. No compulsory insurance premium was identified in the checked pricing or terms.
After the loan expires, the terms provide for continued interest on outstanding principal and fees. Default may also result in credit reporting, collection charges and reasonable legal recovery costs.
Repayment difficulties and complaints
Contact Smartcash promptly on 0800 222 465 or admin@smartcash.co.nz. Its FAQs request at least two business days’ notice to stop or alter a direct debit. For unforeseen hardship, submit a written explanation and a proposed repayment solution.
Raise complaints with Smartcash first. Its terms name Financial Services Complaints Limited as its external scheme; contact FSCL on 0800 347 257 to confirm it can consider your complaint. Free financial mentoring support is available through MoneyTalks on 0800 345 123.
Is Smartcash worth considering?
Smartcash’s strongest feature is access to a small unsecured advance with repayments tied to income dates. Its main limitation is the fixed-fee burden over a short repayment period. The decisive comparison is the complete cost of covering the expense, including whether repayment would create another shortfall. A lower-interest headline alone does not establish better value.
Smartcash payday loan FAQs
Can I borrow the full $300, or does my income limit the amount?
Smartcash advertises $100–$300, but also caps borrowing at 20% of your after-tax pay over the loan period. By calculation, a $300 request requires at least $1,500 of net pay during that period to meet this cap. Your expenses, existing commitments and credit assessment still matter. Compare the amount you could actually qualify for, rather than the advertised maximum.
Does Smartcash’s 49% annual interest rate make it cheaper than other payday lenders?
The interest rate alone cannot establish that. Smartcash charges 0.134% daily, described as 49% annually, plus a $55 establishment fee and $5 per payment processed. For a $100 loan repaid once, those two fees alone equal 60% of the amount borrowed. A credit check can add $15, same-day transfer $10 and wage deductions $20 where applicable. Compare the total repayment for the same amount and dates; see the worked cost illustration.
What could stop me receiving a Smartcash loan today?
The 3.30pm business-day cutoff applies to approval, not simply submitting the form. Outstanding bank statements, employer verification or affordability enquiries can delay the decision. Same-day payment also depends on your bank and costs $10. If the expense can wait, Smartcash advertises standard overnight transfer without that additional charge. Its processing hours are 9am–5pm, Monday–Friday, excluding public holidays.
Will Smartcash consider bad credit, and could it require repayments through my employer?
Smartcash considers credit history alongside current repayment capacity and conducts credit checks. Its application guidance says applicants with poor credit may be offered payroll deductions, but this does not establish approval. A $20 wage-deduction fee applies where relevant, and employer involvement is part of that arrangement. When comparing offers, check both the total cost and whether the required repayment method suits your circumstances.
Can I qualify if I am self-employed or receive benefits?
Smartcash’s FAQs say self-employed applicants may qualify if they earn over $400 weekly after tax and can demonstrate regular bank deposits. However, its general criteria specify three months of continuous, permanent employment. Ask Smartcash how it assesses your employment status before relying on either statement.
The general $400 weekly employment-income threshold excludes ACC, StudyLink and Work and Income payments. Benefit income alone therefore does not meet it. Smartcash also assesses individual income rather than combining a couple’s earnings to reach the threshold.
Do I have to use Credit Sense, and will Smartcash contact my employer?
You can provide the requested three months of bank statements as emailed PDFs instead of authorising access through Credit Sense. Screenshots are not accepted. This choice concerns statement delivery: Smartcash separately requires permission to check employment and pay with your payroll contact. An online application therefore does not mean your employer will be uninvolved.
Do instalments or early repayment reduce the cost?
Smartcash offers up to four weekly repayments, two fortnightly repayments or repayment on your next monthly payday, within its maximum 31-day term. At $5 per payment processed, four payments incur $20 in processing fees, compared with $5 for one. Earlier principal repayments may reduce interest, so compare complete schedules. Smartcash says interest stops at settlement when you repay early; request a settlement figure rather than assuming establishment or other fees will be refunded.
What happens if my payday changes or I cannot meet a repayment?
Smartcash requests at least two business days’ notice to stop or alter a direct debit. Its published charges include $20 for an agreed repayment change and $30 for a scheduled payment default. Extensions require agreement; they are not automatic. Interest can continue after the loan expires, and collection costs may follow. Contact Smartcash on 0800 222 465 promptly and ask about hardship assistance where relevant.
Can I use Smartcash to repay another payday loan, or borrow again immediately?
Smartcash excludes applicants with an outstanding loan from another online payday lender and permits only one Smartcash payday loan at a time. This makes it unsuitable for refinancing an active payday loan. After repayment, another application remains subject to assessment: returning customers are asked for updated bank statements and may undergo another credit check, with the applicable charge. Previous approval does not establish eligibility for further borrowing.
