SmartCash short-term loans: review summary

  • Provider and purpose: Smartcash Limited offers direct, online, unsecured loans for small, temporary cash shortfalls between paydays.
  • Amounts and terms: NZ$100–NZ$300 over 2–31 days, subject to affordability. Repayments coincide with your paydays.
  • Interest and APR: Published interest is 0.134% daily, described as 49% annually. One official page labels this 49% APR, but fees are additional; it is not an all-inclusive borrowing cost.
  • Fees and insurance: A $55 establishment fee and $5 per processed repayment apply. Credit checks, same-day transfers, wage deductions and repayment changes can add charges. No compulsory loan insurance was identified in the published pricing or terms reviewed.
  • Standard eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18, legally resident in New Zealand, employed continuously and permanently for at least three months, and earn at least $400 weekly after tax from employment. Other criteria and credit checks apply; self-employed applicants should clarify conflicting guidance.
  • Application and timing: Apply online. Same-day funding may be available for approval before 3.30pm on a normal business day, subject to completed checks, bank processing and a $10 fee.
  • Suitability and limitation: Potentially suitable for a one-off expense with a clear repayment source. Fixed fees are substantial relative to the small loan amounts, making repeated borrowing particularly costly.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on SmartCash

With SmartCash, I would look closely at what remains in your budget after repayment. Fixed fees can outweigh the interest on a small advance, so needing another loan shortly afterwards may mean paying those charges again. Map out the bills and everyday expenses due between the repayment date and your following payday. At LoansFinder, we encourage that comparison alongside the total borrowing cost: a repayment can fit on payday while leaving too little for the days that follow. The useful question is whether this loan helps you get back on track without needing another advance.

SmartCash eligibility and required documents

The standard qualifying criteria require:

  • Age 18 or above and legal New Zealand residence.
  • At least three months of continuous, permanent employment.
  • Employment income of at least $400 a week after tax, excluding ACC, StudyLink and Work and Income payments.
  • A New Zealand bank account receiving your earnings, an email address and an active mobile phone.
  • No current loan with another online payday lender.

Prepare proof of identity, income and expense details, existing debt information, payroll contact details and three months of bank statements up to your application date. SmartCash assesses repayment capacity and credit history; meeting the minimum criteria does not establish affordability or approval.

Self-employment needs clarification: the FAQ accepts self-employed applicants earning over $400 weekly after tax with regular banked income, while the dedicated eligibility page requires permanent employment. Confirm which assessment applies before proceeding.

Who a SmartCash short-term loan may suit

This product may suit an employed borrower facing an isolated expense who can repay from upcoming earnings without leaving rent, food or existing debts unpaid. Its small borrowing range can limit the amount taken on, but does not make repayment inexpensive.

Reconsider if the money would cover a recurring budget deficit, repay another payday lender or require further borrowing next month. Before comparing short-term borrowing options, ask whether the bill provider offers a payment arrangement or your employer offers a salary advance. Compare any available bank facility by its total dollar cost.

If shortfalls keep returning, help with managing debt may be more useful than another application. MoneyTalks provides free financial support and connections to financial mentors on 0800 345 123.

How the SmartCash application works

Application and assessment

Complete the official online application with your personal, employment, banking and budget information. SmartCash’s published process presents documents for electronic signing before final assessment, so receiving a contract does not mean approval.

Confirm your email, provide the requested statements and allow employment and credit checks. The privacy provisions permit relevant information sharing with credit-reporting agencies and verification with third parties. Read those permissions before consenting.

Repayments normally leave your bank account on paydays. The published options include up to four weekly repayments, two fortnightly repayments or repayment on your next monthly payday, within the agreed term. Wage deductions may be requested in some circumstances.

Approval and payment timing

SmartCash advertises an approval response in approximately 60 minutes once signed documents and necessary information are available. Payroll verification, affordability checks or missing information can extend this.

Its funding guidance offers same-day payment for approval before 3.30pm on a normal business day, subject to bank processing, for $10. It describes next-day funding without that transfer fee. Confirm timing around weekends and public holidays.

Questions to ask before accepting SmartCash

  • How much cash will reach my account, and what is the total repayment including every applicable fee?
  • How many $5 processing charges apply, and will I pay for a credit check, wage deduction or expedited transfer?
  • Is interest charged on fees during the agreed term, and what changes if a payment is late?
  • What remains from each payday after the repayment, essential bills and existing commitments?
  • What happens if my employment ends, and what would an agreed payment change or early settlement cost?

SmartCash advantages and limitations

Advantages: no asset security is required, repayments can follow paydays, and early repayment is available. Eligible applicants may access funds quickly once checks are complete.

Limitations: the maximum advertised advance is $300, repayment is concentrated within 31 days, and the establishment charge is large relative to the cash received. Employment verification involves your payroll contact. The inconsistent self-employment guidance also needs resolving for affected applicants.

SmartCash interest, fees and total repayment

SmartCash publishes 0.134% daily interest and 49% annual interest. Its bad-credit information page calls the annual figure APR, while the terms call it AIR. Fees sit alongside this rate, so comparing 49% alone understates the amount you would pay.

The published charges are:

  • Establishment: $55.
  • Repayment processing: $5 per payment processed.
  • Same-day transfer: $10 where selected and available.
  • Credit check: $15 where applicable.
  • Wage deduction: $20 where applicable.
  • Rescheduling: $20 for each agreed change to a payment amount or date.
  • Default: $30 for a missed scheduled payment.

The uncompleted application page displays a $10 processing figure, whereas the pricing and terms specify $5 per processed repayment. Without a completed repayment schedule, that display does not establish your processing total. Request an itemised quotation.

No compulsory insurance premium was identified in the reviewed pricing or terms. Confirm the final agreement contains no additional required product or charge.

Illustration: borrowing $100 for 14 days

Our calculation, not a SmartCash quotation: assume one repayment after 14 days, simple interest on the $100 principal only, a $55 establishment fee, one $5 processing fee and an applicable $15 credit-check fee. Interest would be approximately $1.88, giving a total repayment of $176.88 and a borrowing cost of $76.88.

This assumes standard funding and excludes wage deductions, repayment changes, default or recovery charges, and interest on financed fees. The actual agreement’s calculation method and rounding may differ. The key implication is that the $75 of assumed fees outweighs the interest: shortening the term would remove relatively little of this cost.

Missed payments, hardship and complaints

Published terms provide for continuing interest on outstanding principal and fees after expiry, default reporting and additional collection or reasonable legal recovery costs. They also list leaving your current employment as a default event; clarify the consequences if your work situation may change.

Contact SmartCash before a payment becomes unaffordable. Its FAQ requests at least two working days to stop or alter a direct debit. Hardship requests should be submitted in writing, explaining the circumstances and proposed repayment change.

Use the contact form or call 0800 222 465, Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm, excluding public holidays. For an unresolved complaint, its terms identify Financial Services Complaints Limited. Contact FSCL on 0800 347 257 to confirm jurisdiction and seek independent assistance.

Is SmartCash worth considering?

SmartCash’s strongest feature is access to a small unsecured advance with repayments aligned to earnings. Its main limitation is the fixed cost attached to that small amount. Compare the cash received, total repayment and money left after each deduction with any available payment arrangement or alternative credit. An affordable-looking daily interest charge is insufficient grounds to choose this loan.

SmartCash short-term loan FAQs

Can I borrow the full $300 from SmartCash?

Not necessarily. SmartCash advertises $100–$300, but its FAQ also limits the advance to up to 20% of your after-tax pay over the loan period, subject to affordability. For example, $800 of qualifying take-home pay during that period implies a $160 ceiling before further assessment. Interest and fees increase what you must repay, so this income-based limit is not the total repayment amount.

How should I compare SmartCash’s cost with another lender?

Compare the total repayment for the same cash amount and repayment dates. SmartCash’s advertised 49% annual interest figure excludes additional fees. Under its published pricing, a $100 advance with one repayment and an applicable credit check attracts $55 establishment, $5 processing and $15 credit-check charges: $75 before interest. Same-day funding and wage deductions can add further costs. A lower interest rate alone does not establish a cheaper loan.

Does SmartCash accept bad credit, and could it change how I repay?

SmartCash checks credit history alongside your current ability to repay. Its application guidance says applicants with poor credit may be offered repayment through payroll deductions; approval remains conditional. A $20 wage-deduction fee applies where relevant. When comparing offers, check both the total cost and whether repayments involve your employer, rather than treating acceptance of bad credit as the only deciding factor.

Can I qualify if some or all of my income comes from benefits?

SmartCash’s standard criteria require at least $400 weekly after tax from employment, excluding ACC, StudyLink and Work and Income payments. Benefits alone do not meet that requirement. If you combine wages and benefits, a total income above $400 does not necessarily qualify you: the employment portion must meet the stated threshold, and the remaining eligibility and affordability checks still apply.

Can self-employed applicants qualify despite the permanent-employment requirement?

SmartCash publishes conflicting guidance. Its FAQ accepts self-employed applicants earning over $400 weekly after tax, with earnings regularly deposited into their bank account. Its eligibility page instead requires three months of continuous, permanent employment. Ask SmartCash to confirm which criteria and income evidence apply before completing an application; the public information does not resolve that difference.

What determines whether SmartCash can pay me today?

The relevant deadline is approval before 3.30pm on a normal business day, rather than simply submitting the form before then. Employment verification, bank statements and affordability enquiries must be completed, and payment depends on your bank processing the transfer. The same-day option costs $10; SmartCash describes next-day funding without that transfer fee. Its approximate one-hour assessment time is conditional on the required checks.

Can I send bank statements without using Credit Sense, and will SmartCash contact my employer?

Yes. SmartCash’s FAQ offers either Credit Sense with your consent or statements emailed as PDFs; screenshots are not accepted. Prepare the latest three months through your application date. Payroll verification is a separate check: SmartCash asks permission to confirm employment and pay details with your employer. Choosing PDFs does not remove that requirement, which matters when comparing lenders’ application processes and privacy implications.

Will repaying SmartCash early substantially reduce the cost?

Early repayment is available, and SmartCash says interest is charged only up to the repayment date. However, a shorter term does not mean a proportionately cheaper loan, because establishment and other incurred fees can account for much of the cost. Request a dated settlement figure and confirm any processing charge or fee rebate. The published early-repayment wording does not establish that those fees will be refunded.

Can I use SmartCash to repay another payday loan or hold two loans at once?

SmartCash’s criteria exclude applicants with a current loan from another online payday lender, and its FAQ allows only one SmartCash payday loan at a time. An existing payday balance must therefore be repaid before eligibility is reconsidered. Returning customers still undergo assessment and may face another credit check and associated charge. If you need new borrowing to clear the current balance, discuss repayment support with the existing lender first.
